Aether Revolt

Saheeli and Kaladesh

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by mattgmueller 64 Comments

Hey Mark, first time asking for Birthday Trivia. Saheeli is my favorite walker so maybe something about her or Kaladesh, or Thopters, something Saheeli-adjacent is cool too. Thank you for being awesome and have a great day.

Originally, Chandra was going to be the face of Kaladesh, but we realized she made more sense for Aether Revolt, so we designed a new planeswalker. We wanted to play up the invention theme, so we made a character that was an amazing inventor, Saheeli.Happy Birthday!

Creature Type Updates

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by captainjackharness 36 Comments

Any thoughts on giving creatures with types in their name the actual creature type? Such as Shadowmoor's Demigod of Revenge getting Demigod, in addition to its Spirit Avatar types it already has? Or Elite Inquisitor getting Inquisitor? Or the Aether Revolt Rebels getting that?

When we errata creature types, we often do that, but not always. The word being in the name doesn’t always line up. A Giant Spider is not a Giant as an example.

Rebel Creature Type Update

New 14 Dec 2022 Asked by llanowarminotaur 29 Comments

Today it was previewed that the Rebel creature type is returning, this time detached from the Masques block tutoring mechanic. Now that it's no longer a special mechanic-restricted type, will it be added to other creatures that are clearly rebels (for example, Frontline Rebel from Aether Revolt)?

There are no current plans to do that as far as I know.

Saheeli Rai Origin

New 30 Aug 2022 Asked by luttledude 42 Comments

Hi MaRo, it's my birthday today. Is there any trivia about my favorite planeswalker, Saheeli?

The original plan for Kaladesh was to have Chandra be the face of the set, but it became pretty clear that she was a better choice for the rebellion of Aether Revolt. Kaladesh was all about invention and that’s just not Chandra’s thing, so we made a inventor planeswalker to be the face of Kaladesh and that was Saheeli.Happy Birthday!

Balancing Class and Creature Types

New 21 Jul 2022 Asked by feyd-ruin 50 Comments

While I understand the complexities that prevented the artificers in Aether Revolt from having the creature type Rebels, doesn’t Frontline Rebel violate the “card names with a class name should have that class” guideline? How do you balance this, especially looking at the possibilities for reprinting such a card where the nuance of why it’s not a rebel may be lost?

I think it should have been a Rebel. That said, monitoring creature types can get pretty complex. They are the one part of the card that regularly has mechanical and creative ramifications.

Praise for Aether Revolt Lore

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by felixschweinsteiger 34 Comments

Hi Mark, I went on a wikipedia rabbit hole and the prophecies from Ahmonket are probably the best pieces of lore I've seen in a game in a long time. Massive kuddos to whoever came up with those

It was the Amonkhet creative team, but I sadly don’t remember who specifically.

White’s Primary Enchantress Effect

New 19 Oct 2021 Asked by quantext 38 Comments

In the mechanical color pie article it still lists white as being primary in enchantress effects, but white hasn't received a full enchantress effect since Planar Chaos (Mesa Enchantress) and hasn't received an aura specific enchantress effect since Aether Revolt. (Sram) Why is it still listed as being primary even if it almost never receives this effect?

Being in color pie means it’s available to get it (with a restriction of one card per turn).

Complimenting K. Arsenault Rivera's Work

New 29 Sep 2021 Asked by the--melon--lord 40 Comments

Less an ask than a comment.

I have found the storytelling by K. Arsenault Rivera simply superb, my favorite since the Era of Aether Revolt, such as "Renewal".

Please send my compliments to the author and thank you for the return of these web stories!

Will do.

Kaladesh/Aether Revolt Development Trivia

New 15 May 2021 Asked by echmiadzin 30 Comments

For my 29th bday I wish to invoke the rite of bday trivia, and about Kaladesh/Aether Revolt development. Anything fun, cute, or quirky about that time?

Ian Duke who co-led Kaladesh development made an elaborate chart of what effects you could get for each amount of energy. He and his team spent a lot of time on the energy economy.Happy Birthday!

Kaya's Axes in Story

New 05 Jan 2021 Asked by spartacusreturned 69 Comments

"The axes in the key art are to help sell the larger Norse flavor. It’s not a story point." Why not create a planeswalker that would fit the box art then? Like how Saheeli was created because Chandra was a better fit for Aether Revolt than Kaladesh.

I was incorrect. Kaya’s axes do play a role in the story. Her card art takes place at a time in the story before she gets the axes.

Set Appeal Continuity

New 14 Dec 2019 Asked by magicthecasual 65 Comments

Mark, when I was still a kid, I begged my parents to let me go to the aether revolt prereleases because it was the "coolest set they've done in awhile". But. Then I kept saying that for every set that. Followed

We’ll try to keep that up.

Rebels in Kaladesh

New 23 Oct 2019 Asked by notyourcaptainspeaking 20 Comments

Did you consider putting rebels in Kaladesh block?

I think we talked about it (more for Aether Revolt though).

Theros Design Timeline

New 11 Sep 2019 Asked by lookingupanddown 37 Comments

What was the newest-released set when R&D began work on Theros: Beyond Death?

We start design in sets about three years prior to release. So, around the time Aether Revolt came out.

Kaladesh, Aether Revolt and Ravnica Allegiance.

Planeswalker Set Timeline

New 21 Mar 2019 Asked by barracius 54 Comments

What was the newest Standard set at the time that it was determined that WAR was going to be the Planeswalker set?

I handed off the design two years ago. So, you all were playing Kaladesh and Aether Revolt while vision design was working on it.

Event Sets Criteria

New 10 Mar 2019 Asked by somethin-to-nothin 41 Comments

If event sets are based around a single event, weren't Hour of Devastation and Aether Revolt also event sets?

Event sets are about focusing on an event over focusing on a world. You’ll have to wait and see War of the Spark to understand the difference. It’s about a higher percentage of cards focusing on the event.

Card Changes Timing

New 11 Feb 2019 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 44 Comments

How soon before a set releases can you still change cards? If you had found out about the Felidar Guardian combo a month before Aether Revolt was set to release, could you have changed it in time?

The earliest set we could do a last minute fix on if today we realized there was a problem would be Archery (the October set).

Aether Revolt Naming

New 24 Jan 2019 Asked by inexorableblob 46 Comments

Was the name of the set Aether Revolt deliberately chosen for the ligature change?

No, it was chosen as a name and it got me to rally everyone to finally drop the ligature.

AE Ligature Change

New 23 Jan 2019 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 56 Comments

While sorting my cards, I discovered that there were some cards that on older printings, used the conjoined "AE" in a lot of Aether cards, but nowadays they are printed as two distinct letters. Why the change? Even Gatherer recognizes and uses the old lettering.

The Ae ligature caused all sorts of problems both internally and on social media when people were trying to reference the cards, so with Aether Revolt, we reverted it to an A and an e.

Proliferate Storm Scale Status

New 14 Jan 2019 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 55 Comments

What's Proliferate on the Storm Scale?

I would have said 4 if you asked me before we tried to get it in Kaladesh and Aether Revolt (two different attempts) and a 5 before we tried to get it into Ravnica Allegiances. Now, let’s call it a 6. We haven’t given up though. It just has more environmental requirements than we thought. I’m optimistic we’ll do it eventually.
