CEDH Staple Card Availability

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by lrhall94universe-blog 4 Comments

As someone who plays mostly CEDH there are a few staples that are not reserve list that tend to just be generally hard to find even though they are not expensive, while secret lairs have introduced new arts and inventory for some of these cards certain cards like demonic consultation, tarnished citadel, and orcish lumberjack are still hard to comeby in good condition. i know you guys can't reprint everything all the time but maybe expressing CEDH meta cards in reprint sets helps people enter into this growing sub-sect of a fun and exciting format; Cheers and Looking forward to MTGxMarvel and FF

I can pass along the request.

Commander Favoritism Misconception

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by obazervazi 6 Comments

I really think you guys don't give Commander as much favoritism as people assume. Modern players mostly only play the best cards, so a set dedicated to modern can only have so many cards for Modern without massive power creep. Commander players will play anything if it's cool enough, no matter how bad it is, so any set will necessarily have more cards for casual Commander than Modern. And honestly, mh3 has more cards good in Modern tournaments than in cEDH.

Modern Horizons III has as many cards aimed at Modern as we feel comfortable aiming at Modern. Remember the feedback from previous Modern Horizons was too many cards mattered in Modern.

Competitive vs Casual Play

New 08 May 2024 Asked by zackdes44 26 Comments

For about a year during COVID, I played cEDH. I find my greater understanding of the stack, interaction, timing, etc make me a much better casual magic player and I enjoy the game more. Do you think players should learn to play competitive magic, even if they want to be casual players?

I think people should play in whatever way makes the game the most enjoyable for them.

Infect Archetype Paradox

New 24 Mar 2024 Asked by xansor 60 Comments

Something that has always confused me is that despite "infect" (my favorite keyword/archetype) being one of, if not the most, hated deck archetype at casual commander tables, it is still somehow the most popular archetype of the most popular commander in the game (Atraxa, Preators Voice). I also think it's worth noting she is by no means cEDH. So, how can her infect archetype be so statistically popular, and yet so many people dislike playing against it in person?

Infect (and poison, in general) is very polarizing, but that means there’s a group that really likes it.

Faerie Schemes Feedback

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by askmaro 21 Comments

I just wanted to leave a note on Faerie Schemes. I’m a primarily cEDH player, but bought it because I wanted a casual deck with a fun theme. It’s by far the best experience I’ve had with a Magic product in the past five years. The typal synergies were nice, but what was really cool was figuring out all the subtle interactions with Hullbreaker Horror and Malleable Impostor. When y’all are making precons, please don’t stop putting in layers of discovery. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable than just playing the obvious strategy (and it makes the decks more powerful too).

Glad you enjoyed it. I’ll pass along the kind words to the team that designed it.

Preference in Multiplayer Formats

New 31 May 2022 Asked by tempus-vulpes 41 Comments

I remember you saying that part of why you aren't a huge fan of Commander is because of the politics aspect. I was curious of if that holds true for other multi-player formats as well, and if so, would you be more interested in cEDH where despite the multi-player style the political aspect is minimized since there is more of a focus on winning as best/quickly/overwhelmingly/correctly as you can?

My favorite multiplayer format is Two-Headed Giant which has no politics.

Commander on Pro Tour

New 28 May 2020 Asked by horizonsgift 94 Comments

Hey Mark. I had a question about something you generally aren't asked about! (To my knowledge). I believe you've stated that commander/brawl/cedh players represent a rather large bulk of MTG play currently. If that's the case, would it be reasonable to suggest that a singleton format of that nature have representation on the Pro Tour?

The success of Commander has been its casual nature. The worst thing we could do for the format is put it on the Pro Tour.

Red in Commander

New 28 May 2014 Asked by justchainsawthings 47 Comments

Hi Mark! Long time listener, first time caller! Many people believe that Red is the weakest color in Commander because burn is ineffective against a higher starting life total. I know that Chaos Warp hurt the color pie but are there plans to give red more tools to be a competitive commander color? Was Flamespeaker Shaman a step in this direction or a one-off mythic?

We’re looking for ways to help red in Commander but we want to find solutions that stay true to red’s slice of the color pie.
