Yargle and Multani

Vanilla Creatures Future

I just finished reading your Nuts and Bolts article! As someone who mostly plays pauper and draft, I find the discussion of commons very interesting.Do you think it’s fair to say that R&D is moving away from vanilla creatures? With fewer common slots I would assume that there’s not any room to fit them into a set (save for vanilla creatures with a large body, like Yargle and Multani in MOM)

We are moving away from Vanilla creatures as a regular staple. They will exist from time to time, but yes, we’re doing less of them.

Vanilla Creature Usage

Are vanilla creatures just dead? The only one we've had since Strixhaven is Yargle and Multani.

They’re not dead, but are being used less frequently.

Creature Type Queries

Hi Mark, I am building a Yargle and Multani deck, and I was wondering two things.1. Was Yargle ever considered to be typed as Frog Horror instead of a Frog Spirit?2. Why is Multani an Elemental and not a Treefolk? His appearance shares a resemblance to a lot of Treefolk we see in Magic.

1. I’m not sure.2. Multani is a Maro. They are elementals that form themselves out of nature. Some of the time, those elements could be parts of trees, but next time it might not.

Elder Type Missing

I understand why the class types of the team-up cards are missing, but why is Ghalta and Mavren missing the Elder type? I wouldn't consider that a class anymore than I'd consider "Horror" or "Spirit" a class on Thalia and the Gitrog Monster or Yargle and Multani.

Elder is odd as it’s neither race nor class.

Yargle vs Multani Power

How can a card like Yargle and Multani be viewed as anything but wild power creep?

Vanilla creatures are known for their long history of breaking formats. : )
