Vile Bile Interaction

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by baboon-87 21 Comments

with the card Vile Bile, is the player allowed to pick it up and attempt to touch another player with it? do gloves/card sleeves negate its effect?

No. The player has to touch the card for the effect to happen. The card touching the player doesn’t trigger it.

Views on Playtest and Uncards

New 04 Jul 2021 Asked by benalishhero 84 Comments

"but a lot of time is spent making sure the cards work cohesively and lead to fun play patterns for the players who enjoy stretching the boundaries of what Magic allows. I do believe there are playtest cards that do that, but not consistently." A higher proportion of playtest cards fit this definition than uncards. Too many uncards care about nonsense. Largepox or Sunimret are actual Magic cards (that are also funnier), whereas Vile Bile or Farewell to Arms are neither fun nor functional.

Here’s an important life lesson, and one key to being a good game designer - people want different things out of their games. Just because you don’t personally like something doesn’t make it “neither fun nor functional”. Vile Bile, for example, was a high ranked card from Unhinged. There are a many people that enjoyed playing it. Its existence brought a lot of fun into the world for the players who liked what it added to Magic. It’s fine to say “these are the things I enjoy when I play Magic and I personally would like to see more things like that”. It’s not okay to say, “because I don’t enjoy these things, they’re not Magic”. Denying other people’s reality is a very dangerous habit that can both result in you causing other people pain and can keep you from finding new things they may bring you happiness. My issue with the playtest cards is not that people can’t enjoy them (obviously, many like yourselves do), but that I have a standard of quality that I hold for Magic design that this line of cards fell beneath. Magic, as a brand, is known for excellence of gameplay. That comes from products going through many iterations of designs, being evaluated by a large number of people, and fine-tuned through rigorous playtesting. The crux here is we’re arguing on two different vectors. You dislike that the game includes components that you don’t personally enjoy while I’m defending a work ethic I hold dear. I’m not sure our back and forth is accomplishing much. Let me end with this. One of my truisms is every complaint comes from a kernel of truth. There is a quality of the playtest cards that you enjoy. You like when we push in space that’s more tangibly future black border space. That’s something future sets, potentially even future Un-sets, can explore.

Are you allowed to pick up vile bile and poke your opponent with it until you win?

Vile Bile only does damage when it is touched, not when it touches something else.

Whats your opinion on the 60 Vile Bile deck in competitive play?

I like seeing people playing burn decks. : )I’d keep my eye on it for the next Mythic Championship.

Dice Roll Standards

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by aazadan 37 Comments

I've noticed that cards don't specify dice standards. If I were to get a d20 that has all 20's on it, could I roll that for Sword of Dunegeons and Dragons? Similarly, could I roll a d6 that's scaled in units of 100's? Lastly, what's the ruling on moving cards to avoid dice from hitting them? When can I no longer rearrange the battlefield? Actually... one other question too. If a dice is touching a card sleeve, can I argue that the sleeve is a barrier and it's not directly touching the dice

The FAQ spells this out but six-sided dice are dice with six sides with a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. 20-sided same thing but 1 - 20. Thanks to Vile Bile, it’s a silver border rule that sleeves are considered part of the card.

You only lose life for touching Vile Bile not for having Vile Bile touch you.

Un-Rules Manager Insight

New 25 May 2016 Asked by livefromtheloam 46 Comments

Happy Birthday! I'm surprised there haven't been any Un- related stories, so here's one. A couple friends and I did a triple Unhinged draft one night. My opponent played Vile Bile, and I took it to read what it did, losing 2 life. Next turn, I absentmindedly did it again and lost 2 life. He started laughing, so I grabbed the card (losing another 2 life) and began swinging it at him. In my (then) decade of martial arts practice, I'd never seen such an expert defense. He went untouched!

: )As the Un-Rules Manager, I feel obliged to point out that you lose life for touching it. You don’t lose life of it touching you.

Vile Bile's Mechanics

New 28 Aug 2014 Asked by fremanofkol 13 Comments

Un rules question. If I draw vile bile do I loose 2 life straight away it does the ability only count after I have played it. Also is there anything to stop me slapping my opponent with it til they loose the game?

Vile Bile’s ability only works once it is on the battlefield (this means drop it from your hand onto the battlefield). You lose life if you touch it not if it touches you so your opponent has to touch it (on the battlefield) of their own volition.

Vile Bile does not do damage to players if you touch them with it. They have to touch it. Happy healing!

Urgent Un questions for April Fool's: Is it legal to tuck cards into your hat brim for Phyrexian Librarian's upkeep? Also, can you place Vile Bile anywhere on the battlefield, or does it need to be on your own side of the table? (That is, can you set it next to your opponent's graveyard or library to make them more likely to touch it?)

No and no.

How long after casting Vile Bile do you have until it starts causing you to lose life? If it's in my hand, I need to place it onto the battlefield.

It has to be on the battlefield for its ability to work. I normally drop it into play from my hand.

Wurms Iconic Status

Dear Mr Rosewater, what's wrong with Wurms being Green's iconic Mythic fatty? They're one of the most awesome things about Magic! :)

EDIT: Tumblr’s messing up. This one’s a hard one to paraphrase. It was a joke about how you rule Vile Bile when playing against a robot. There is a whole series of Un-rulings based on playing against a robot. “Titanium exo-carapace” is in there.

No. You have to touch Vile Bile for the damage to happen not have Vile Bile touch you.
