Throat Wolf References

"We’ve made numerous Throat Wolf nods over the years and Unstabie has a creature that can attack on the opponent’s turn. Also, it’s not a reference many Magic players get." Most notably, Talruum Champion is a reference to Throat Wolf. (I'm sad it doesn't push *all* first strike-time attack damage back, including double strike, but I imagine doing that with existing rules is a pain.)

That was one of our Throat Wolf designs.

Throat Wolf Tribute

Hi Mark! Have you ever considered making a homage to the apocryphal "Throat Wolf" card for, say, a future Modern Horizons 2 -- A creature with 'Firstest strike' that can somehow attack on an opponent's turn? Would be a wild mechanical space to explore and also a cool reference to MTG's early history before everyone truly knew what cards were and weren't out there. :)

We’ve made numerous Throat Wolf nods over the years and Unstabie has a creature that can attack on the opponent’s turn. Also, it’s not a reference many Magic players get.For those not in the know, back in the early days when Wizards didn’t share card lists from sets, the Internet (which was the Usenet at the time) had a running joke where people would talk about opening a Throat Wolf. Each one was different in what it did, but it always has firstest strike.

With the inclusion of Last Strike, does that mean we can finally get Throat Wolf, or is that too inside baseball for 2017?

It’s pretty Inside Baseball. Let’s check. Do you know what Throat Wolf is, yes or no?

Did you ever consider putting a Throat Wolf in Innistrad?

That joke would miss for 99.9% of the audience. In fact, how many Question Marks know what Throat Wolf is? And I think I’ve talked about it before on Blogatog which is where some people even know about it from.

Throat Wolf Legend

Do you get a lot of questions about the Throat Wolf joke?

Not any more. It’s a very old joke. For those that never heard of Throat Wolf, it was Magic’s first urban legend. Supposedly, Throat Wolf was an ultra rare card printed on its own sheet. Each Throat Wolf was different but they all had “firstest strike”.

Throat Wolf Legend

It's my birthday! Can you give me some trivia on my favorite green card: Throat Wolf?

How many of you know what Throat Wolf is? It’s Magic’s first urban legend. It was supposedly the first super-rare card that appeared very infrequently. Supposedly as the rumor goes, there was a full sheet of Throat Wolves each with their own special ability that got hand sorted and placed in packs. The one thing they all had in common was firstest strike. This was back during Magic’s early years when most of the chatter was on the Usenet. Players would talk about how they opened one and would then explain the strange rules text that it had. The trivia you might not know is that there was a set that was going to make a Throat Wolf but it got changed last minute and it ended up being Heart Wolf (in the set Homelands). Happy Birthday!

Origins of Throat Wolf

I think it may have been before my time, so what exactly IS the throat wolf joke?

Back in the early days of Magic there were no lists of what the cards were (well, at least nothing official). There started an urban legend that there was a special, super rare card called Throat Wolf. It always seemed to vary what it did but the creature always had firstest strike.

Throat Wolf Consideration

I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere before, but was the mythical Throat Wolf ever considered for inclusion in Unglued, Unglued 2, and/or Unhinged?

Yes, it has. The biggest strike against it is that it’s a very old, somewhat out-dated joke.
