Ability Gaining Limits

New 27 Apr 2023 Asked by rodjaromanovich 38 Comments

There's a handful of cards that can gain the activated abilities of other cards. Myr Welder, Experiment Kraj, etc. Any chance there'll be cards in the future that can gain static or triggered abilities in a similar way?

(Cards like Soulflayer that only get specific keyword abilities don't count. I'm looking for open-ended mix&match jank potential.)

The rules have a lot more issues with things gaining static and/or triggered abilities. Whenever I try, the Rules Manager says, “How about activated abilities?”

Keywords List Concerns

New 08 Sep 2022 Asked by rasalhage 27 Comments

sorry for a two-fer; you can answer one, both, or none. I keep coming across cards like Soulflayer and Odric and wonder, how hard would it be to maintain a list of "basic keywords" or "combat keywords" that cards like these could reference? And when you (as in, you all at R&D) make these kinds of cards, how do you decide what keywords to take and which to leave?

What’s evergreen keeps changing, so if we made a vocabulary word for it, it would require constant updating forever. We’re wary of signing up for stuff like that. Normally, when we make the card in question, we list out every keyword that is relevant at the time.

Batching and Evergreen Mechanics

So, if batching becomes a thing, can I please nominate finding a word for evergreen mechanics? I really dislike how wordy Soulflayer is and that Cairn Wanderer doesn't work with many modern mechanics.

That isn’t how batching works. You want us to make Evergreen a vocabulary word with a strict definition which is kept up to date. That, for numerous reasons, is unlikely.

Prowess and Soulflayer

Prowess was excluded from soulflayer because it wasn't evergreen yet. At the time it was the jeskai faction mechanic.

Keywords Specification

New 22 Dec 2016 Asked by deg99 31 Comments

Why do cards like Soul Flayer, Cairne Wanderer, and Animus of Predation specify key words and not just copy any keywords? Doesnt that limit forwards compatability or is that not a concern? Also why exclude prowess from Soulflayer?

It’s a rules issue. The rules require you list them.
