Scorched Earth

Avacyn and Innistrad Changes

Re: Avacyn. I think your read of that question is not what they meant at all. I think what they mean is that you killed off a character a lot of people liked because of how unique and important she was (esp. as a source of good in a dark plane), and now the plane is no longer what they loved. I think there's merit in admitting that SoI/EM did very drastic things (I've heard it being called a "scorched earth plotline") that altered the way people view Innistrad.

Remember that Sigarda has picked up the torch dropped by Avacyn. Innistrad will still have a protective angel just not the same one it used to have. The creative team works hard to craft the type of stories to the world they occur on. Theros, for example, had a Greek mythological style story. Innistrad is a gothic horror plane. Its stories are going to be horror stories. For instance, Mikaeus’s story in original Innistrad was pretty horrific. Shadows over Innistrad, in particular, dipped into cosmic horror which tends to have more severe elements. That said, I hear that the Shadows over Innistrad story was a little too intense for some of you. That’s why the creative team mixes up the types of stories they tell, to make sure that different players get the chance to hear the kind of story they enjoy. Just as every card isn’t for every player, every story isn’t as well. That’s why we constantly push the pendulum to mix things up and make sure players often get the type of story they enjoy. You’ll notice, for instance, that the Kaladesh story is very different from the Shadows over Innistrad story.

Red Strategy

Isn't 'scorched earth' Red's favourite answer to things? After all, the most sure-fire way to remove anything is to take down your opponent...

One of the answers we gave red long ago was the “nuke everything” plan. It’s okay for red to get rid of enchantments when it’s wiping everything out.

Worldfire's Design Philosophy

Just saw Worldfire previewed. I though it was the coolest big timmy red spell in a loooong while... then I saw it actually removes enchantments. Come on, Maro! You gotta fight harder for us color pie purists!

Red has had the ability for years to remove everything. That’s how red removes enchantments - scorched earth!!!
