Power of Blue Cantrips

New 15 Nov 2019 Asked by decafwizard 33 Comments

These days, we are seeing a lot less blue cantrips with a strength level like brainstorm, preordain serum visions, sleight of hand, and so forth printed into standard. Has design determined that these effects are too powerful for limited, or is there a chance we could see cards like these in standard again

I believe play design is wary about them.

Future Set Speculations

Does this mean that Serum Visions or Preordain is coming back in a future set?

The possibility exists but they still have to developmentally make sense.

Modern Format Dynamics

Your posters seem to forget that Delver isn't played in Modern. It's only overpowered when it can be played with 1mana blue deck manipulation (ponder, preordain, brainstorm). Those are the overpowered cards, it just got to play with them in standard. In Modern, Delver is a chump, and that is a very fast format.

I believe some people love to look at the U cost, the 3/2 flying body on the backside of the card and overlook all the work required to make the two happen consistently. : )

Card Rarity Rates

"All rares in boosters are printed at the same rate. The same goes for mythic rares." I call bull. The number of Lightning Bolts I pulled in M11 compared to Duress or Giant Spider is NOT equal. Same goes for Preordain and Ponder and pretty much every really, really good common. And the number of Tunnel Ingi and Red Sun's Zeniths compared to other sweet rares...just no. Unless I'm severely unlucky (not out of the question)

Each rarity appears the same number of times on the sheet. If you bought every Magic booster of a set, you’d have the same number of each rarity. You opening more of one card in a rarity than other is simply the result of variance. We’re not printing less of more desirable cards.

Reprinting Banned Cards

I was disappointed at the absence of Preordain in Theros. What's your stance in reprinting Modern-banned cards in Standard? Also, how likely is it that Preordain will be unbanned?

Usually if a card is banned in Modern, it has some issues.

Limited Play Feedback

New 23 Sep 2013 Asked by mildwongrel 20 Comments

I was unfortunately pretty let down by Theros limited. Everything seemed to revolve around combat tricks and bombs (both of which I find extremely dull) because there was no good removal at common/uncommon, and not enough ways to interact with opponents enchantments. That said, scry being on tons of stuff was AWESOME. I really enjoyed having some degree of card selection, even in limited. If a cantrip on the power level of preordain got (re)printed, I might actually get into standard.

I just want to point out that while the majority of my comments are very positive, not everyone loved the limited play. I hope as you draft you will see that the limited play has some depth to it.

Cantrip Strategy

Are cheap cantrips dead? I really miss Ponder and Preordain.

Cheap cantrips are not dead. We’re just more careful with them these days.
