On the Job

Gavin's First Day

New 13 Aug 2016 Asked by manacharged 18 Comments

Do you remember Gavin's first day on the job? Any good stories?

Gavin started in a section of R&D other than design (development, I think) so I was interacting with him all that much on his first day.

Podcast Appreciation

I just wanted to thank you on your Dream Job podcast from Friday. It was the same day I was let go from my job (where I was unhappy working). Thank you for the timely podcast and thank you for everything you do!

I make things for people to enjoy so I’m always touched when something I did can really connect with someone. Good luck on the job search.

Badger Trivia Gift

New 05 Sep 2015 Asked by caiusastarsight 33 Comments

Hello! It's my birthday AND I just landed my job at WotC UK! Please may I have some trivia about my favourite creatures, badgers?

Rysorian Badger is one of a handful of cards named after a (former) Wizards employee. That employee is Rhias Hall and she used to work in our Organized Play department back in the early days of Magic. Happy Birthday and Congrats on the job!

I just read the "Magic R&D principles" on the job posting. It's really neat. Could you do an article or podcast on that list?

Possibly.

Secret Keeping Skills

Were you always this good at keeping secrets, or did you have to learn it on the job?

I started good at it and have gotten better. : )

Superman's Morality

New 17 May 2015 Asked by l1loneviet1l 69 Comments

About Man of Steel, would you be more accepting of it if you took it as him learning to be superman for the first time?

Superman doesn’t start immoral and learn morality on the job. He was raised by the Kents who instilled in him a strong sense of morality. Also, I believe one can learn that murder is immoral without first having to kill someone.

Functional Reprints Caution

New 29 Aug 2014 Asked by imawizaaard 13 Comments

I'm sure you and everyone else on the job are already aware, but please be careful with the increased rate of functional reprints! Having too many of a specific effect can lead to degenerate decks in formats with larger cardpools.

We try to use reprints when we can. I should note that we tend to let larger formats deal with the issue you’re talking about through other means that don’t prevent us from making new cards.

Hiring Practices

New 23 Aug 2013 Asked by austindoggie 4 Comments

Does wizards hire people from out of state? Do you know a lot of people who moved to Washington solely to work for Wizards?

Most of R&D came from out of state.  Note that some jobs come with a move and some do not depending on the job.

New R&D Employee Onboarding

New 10 Sep 2012 Asked by karric 1 Comments

It seems you're asked the GDS question often, and the answer is always the same, so I'll ask a variation; what's the first day/week/month on the job like for new R&D employees? I'm curious to know how you bring people up to speed.

We tend to throw our interns into the deep end of the pool pretty quickly. There’s a few weeks to get their orientation, but they are assigned teams pretty quickly and they always have other projects to do as well. I think the GDS is a good entry for the design interns because it kind of gets them up and running before they get here.
