Legendary Change Implications

New 21 Jul 2022 Asked by whipandnaenaethesqueakquel 30 Comments

If your legendary change went through and the legendary effect would become an ability put on the most problematic cards, would mirror gallery say "permanents with [legendary effect replacement] do not get destroyed by the effect"

Yes.

Implications of Removing Legends

New 14 Jul 2022 Asked by solaris-adz 38 Comments

Hello Mark! If the rules baggage of legendary were removed, what do you think would happen to Mirror Gallery? Would the card do straight-up nothing? Would it get an erratum to give it any kind of utility?

There have been cards that basically do nothing with a rules change. It’s the cost of the game being able to evolve.

Ignoring Rules in Cards

New 22 May 2022 Asked by hitek1208 44 Comments

If/when another card that says to ignore some rule in magic (ie like sakashima/mirror gallery say to ignore the legend rule)

If. There are not a lot of rules you can ignore without serious consequences.

No Upgrade for One With Nothing

Why do we get a strictly better version of Mirror Gallery, but not an updated version of One With Nothing?

We can’t improve upon One With Nothing. : )

Impact of Mirror Gallery

Doesn't Mirror Gallery remove the legend rule??

My proposal was a little bigger than make one card.

Humor in Mirror Gallery

New 14 May 2021 Asked by theonetrueqriist 32 Comments

It's my birthday and all I want to do is spread my firm belief that Mirror Gallery should have been legendary while passive-aggressively insisting on a much-needed errata to that effect. Take care!

It’s the kind of joke that’s funny for those that get it and confuses those that don’t. We very seldom put words on cards that are never supposed to matter.

Fate of Legend Rule

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by deatht200 39 Comments

youve voiced before that you want the legend rule to be abolished. what would you have mirror gallery do then?

Be an artifact on the battlefield. Rule changes have obsoleted other cards. Again, this rule isn’t changing.

Krark's Thumbs Effect

New 24 Nov 2019 Asked by puppybytes 38 Comments

If I have 2 krark's thumbs in play do I flip 4 coins instead of one?

The card is legendary (to stop this very thing), but let’s assume you have a Mirror Gallery or something out. Yes, in that case, you’d flip four coins.

Legend Rule & Impact

New 16 Oct 2019 Asked by doortonothingness 56 Comments

The question on everyone's lips - what would happen to Mirror Gallery if the legend rule went away? Cards have been made worse due to rules changes in the past but never entirely obsoleted as far as I'm aware

Mana burn leaving obsoleted a few cards.

Mirror Gallery Rewording

New 27 Mar 2019 Asked by derphaven 51 Comments

If Mirror Gallery had been printed more recently, do you think it would have had different wording instead of directly referencing the Legend Rule? Like, "You may control any number of legendary permanents with the same name."

Yes, it would be written differently if we made it today.

Cards Ignoring Rules

New 21 Mar 2019 Asked by ssjbjj-blog 38 Comments

What are your thoughts on cards like Mirror Gallery? Do you consider it a fun twist to ignore existing rules and have you considered doing it with other rules?

It depends on the rule. Breaking rules is kind of Magic’s thing.

Mirror Gallery Query

New 11 Mar 2018 Asked by neotrup 35 Comments

corvus-abyssus asked: "Does Mirror Gallery affect legendary sorceries?" "Why does it matter?" I think the question is (and I would like to know the answer even if it isn't their question): Can I cast a legendary sorcery if there is a Mirror Gallery out, even if I don't control a legendary creature or planeswalker?

That’s a question for Eli. I’m not sure if “the Legend rule” is a specific rule or all rules associated with the Legendary supertype.

Legendary Sorceries Rule

New 11 Mar 2018 Asked by instantkidfarmranch 39 Comments

Is the rule for legendary sorceries considered part of the legend rule? Like with a Mirror Gallery in play, can I cast as many legendary sorceries with the same name as I want?

You can do that without Mirror Gallery.

Unique Keyword Theory

If you made the Unique keyword, and errata'd it onto problematic legends of the past, like, say, Krak's Thumb, would Mirror Gallery remove Unique?

In theory.

Maybe. : )

Legendary Rules Change

New 30 Dec 2015 Asked by tsukuyomihime 15 Comments

Why would removing the rules associated with legendary be a problem? While it would make some cheap legends really good and Mirror Gallery useless, it isn't like those rules haven't changed multiple times anyways. Braid of Fire becoming a lot better without mana burn didn't seem to break anything, and even if it did, the relevant cards could just get banned in formats where they're a problem.

My thought on the matter is a minority opinion in R&D. The majority are not interested in the idea.

Abolishing Legend Rule

New 16 Jul 2015 Asked by mgmegadog 11 Comments

If the legend rule were to be abolished, what would Brothers Yamazaki and Mirror Gallery actually say on them?

I don’t know. We’ve made rules changes that have essentially made cards do nothing before.
