If designed today, do you think Lotus Field would have had a ward ability instead of hexproof?

Probably.

Card Function Question

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by okniwy 64 Comments

Hey Mark. My magic group just saw Krenko's Buzzcrusher, and there are some concerns.
It doesn't say target, and that's fine and can be expected on some cards, but it also doesn't say "choose", and now there is concern that it functionally won't work as intended because it doesn't tell you to select the lands you are destroying.
I understand this is a subject outside your area of expertise, but it's driving us wild.

I went and asked play design. The lack of targeting was done on purpose to help the card deal with Lotus Field, a popular card in various formats.

Hexproof's Continued Existence

I hope hexproof sticks around for effects like Nine Lives and Lotus Field, but less on things like Narset and Geist of Saint Traft.

Hexproof hasn’t left.

Mana System Challenges

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 75 Comments

Its seems that the game breaks everytime the mana system is circumvented in some way, either reducing costs like affinity, creating more mana like the moxen, Mishras Workshop, refunding mana like the untap land mechanic, or spells on credit or hyper efficency like storm/cascade/rebel mechanic. So why does development still dabble in this danger zone with cards like the new Lotus Field?

Fire burns people. Why do we still cook with it? : )Game design is about playing in spaces that excite your audience. There are plenty of cards that mess in this area that don’t cause problems, so it’s more an execution issue than anything else.
