Leyline of the Void

Color Pie Consistency

New 09 May 2023 Asked by athousandlights 34 Comments

“That’s taken into account in their design.”How so? Isn’t it still a color pie break for a red deck to cheat in Leyline of the Void, or a blue deck to cheat in Leyline of Combustion?

To be a color pie break, it has to be a card of that color doing something that’s a break in that color. Cards that can be played by that color, but aren’t that color (like the many colorless artifacts) are treated differently.

Monocolor Effects Combination

The Entomb/Reanimate with Entwine thing got me thinking, why would the Entwine cost need to be green? I'd have thought it was ok as a mono black card. The catch with black being that the card you tutor for does go to the graveyard first, so the Reanimate half still gets blocked by static graveyard hate. Grafdigger's Cage/Rest In Peace/Leyline of the Void and so on.

We need to be careful doing two monocolor effects on the same card where the combination isn’t in color.

Cycle Card Trivia

Cards that were in multiple distinct cycles: Leyline of the Void (Guildpact and M11), Renewed Faith (Onslaught and Amonkhet), and many of the legends in tenth edition were originally part of cycles.

Exile Interaction Rejection

Would you guys consider creating an inverse Leyline of the void effect? "If a card would be put into exile put it into your graveyard" or "on the bottom of your library"

No, because I want things that are supposed to be exiled to be exiled.

Leyline Reprint Reasoning

Why was Leyline of the Void reprinted when all the other colors got new leylines in M11?

Because we thought people would like having it in Standard.

Revisiting Old Cycles

In the past R&D has reprinted individual cards out of cycles. Would you ever consider pulling a card out of an old cycle and designing a new cycle around it?

We did it with the leylines in Magic 2011. (Leyline of the Void was reprinted from the previous leyline cycle.)

Leyline Reprint Decision

New 15 Oct 2012 Asked by doopboopdoop 2 Comments

Why is Leyline of the Void the only Leyline they decided to reprint in m11? The other 4 colors got new Leylines.

Erik Lauer (the Head Developer and lead of that core set) felt the Standard metagame could use it so he repeated it. The other ones weren’t needed so he made new ones.
