Artistic Choices for Biting Leeches

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by bogleech 7 Comments

It doesn't stop me from loving every leech in the game anyway but you gotta tell your artists that biting leeches leech (which are annelid worms) have either a tubular proboscis or three jaws arranged like a letter Y, not circular rings of fangs like a lamprey (a jawless fish). Only one leech in the history of magic comes close to scientific accuracy and was eons ago; Ron Spencer's Sapphire Leech! Oh no!

In our multiverse, sure. : )

I’ll add it to the list.

Removing Poison Counters

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by osxmatt 31 Comments

I believe Leeches is the only card that explicitly removes a poison counter.I know poison is designed to be fundamentally different than life, but if a new card was designed to remove poison, would it still be in White?

Things that don’t happen don’t get a color.

Removing Poison

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by andalon-historian 27 Comments

You've said before that Reprieve and Mana Tithe have been in-color for White for over a decade, but they just didn't get used by design teams. Is it accurate to say that Leeches is still technically in-color for White, but will never be used by a design team again? Or is removing poison counters simply a break in all colors now.

Removing poison is now not in any color.

Poison Counter Mechanics

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by gmzombie007 30 Comments

Hey Mark I've been away from this Tumblr but I'm wondering why a card wasn't made to counter the effects of poison? Like a reprint of solemnity or even a card that would take a few turns to remove all poison in flavor of the story how they used a spark and melira to cleanse the spark of ajani and what they tried with Nissa. I think that was a flavor fail and playpoint fail. My hope is you guys at least print something that fixes this in the future for standard. I had so much fun with the prerelease this past weekend by the way. I love the enchanted tales addition. I had to run green as I pulled a doubling season and a foil defense of the heart lol.

One of the defining qualities of poison in the game is that it can’t be removed. It makes it play very differently than life and makes the mechanic feel more threatening. Note there are cards that can help you prevent getting future poison, just none that take away what you already have (okay except Leeches, but I pretend that card doesn’t exist).

Signing Specific Cards

Yes. I’ll sign any Magic card.

Addressing Color-breaking Cards

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by pop-star-manager-1 51 Comments

You have a problem with color-breaking cards and cards like Leeches, why don't you just ban them?

If I was in charge of the banned and restricted list, I’d seriously consider it. EDIT: I was talking hypothetically. The Head Designer shouldn’t be in charge of the banned and restricted list.

Collectors Card Duplication

New 02 Oct 2021 Asked by glass-vigilante 53 Comments

My collector had 2 curse of leeches full art 1 of them foil, and 2 harvestide infiltrator showcase 1 of them foil. Is this supposed to happen? Why?

They’re being pulled from completely different sheets, so it’s difficult to always prevent.

Poison Removal Mechanics

New 23 Sep 2021 Asked by sneak-theif 23 Comments

I'd never seen leeches before, is there a color that that effect fits in?

No. The inability to remove poison is a key defining quality of poison in the game. It’s a big part of what separates it from life loss.

Rejected Hate for Certain Cards

Really? Your most hated card is Maze of Ith? I would have thought you'd say either Leeches or Hornet Sting.

Leeches and Hornet Sting? What cards are those?

Curse of Leeches Uniqueness

New 22 Sep 2021 Asked by su92 44 Comments

Why is Curse of Leeches the only card that uses daybound/nightbound but has nothing to do with werewolves? Or, rather, why weren't more cards like that?

It might be the only TDFC, but there are single-faced cards that do it.

Removing Poison Counters

New 07 Jan 2014 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 11 Comments

You said that infect had only two cards that removes poison counters. I know of Leeches, but what is the second one? All I can think of is restarting the game via Karn's ultimate.

Leeches is the only card that removes poison counters.
