Heat Ray

Card Rarity Logic

Heat Ray seems, all in all, to be a weaker card than Murder (and cards similar to it; Terror etc), or at best of similar power. With that said, I'm not objecting to the card existing with the cost and effect that it does since it's a pretty straightforward design, but my question is why does it have to be Uncommon, when Murder, Terror etc are Common? Is Black just supposed to be THAT MUCH better at creature removal than Red?

We try to avoid doing X spells at common (although we do do them occasionally) as they are one of the things that most confuses beginners.

Role of Removal Spells

I really like X removal spells like Death Wind and Heat Ray. It seems only fair that if your opponent invests a lot of mana in to a powerful creature, you should have invest a lot to kill it. Do you think "hard removal" like Doomblade (or "fixed removal" like lightning strike) are required in magic? How do you think the game would be like with out them?

I think they play an important role in the game.
