Grizzly Fate

Pun Names Frequency

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by charcharmunro 7 Comments

I know you're probably in favour of them, but does it feel like Magic is maybe putting out too many 'pun-based card names' per set these days? Magic's had them for ages, I know (Squee's Toy and Grizzly Fate, etc.), but it feels like they're a lot more frequent now, with at least a couple per set. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I know some people were upset about, say, Holy Cow.

Pun names usually score well overall in market research.

Bear Pun Tuesday Fun

Have you ever heard of Bear Pun Tuesday? It’s the second Tuesday of every month, and it’s a day whereas you make as many bear puns as you can. I ask because I’m pretty sure that it’s a reference to bears being 2/2s in MTG.

To me, everyday is Bear Pun Day. (A grizzly fate, I know.)

Have we seen the last of cards like Grizzly Fate? (which have multiple mechanics from the same block on one card)

No.

Grizzly Fate Origin

By any chance was the name of the card 'Grizzly Fate' your idea? If not, I don't know whether to be disappointed that it wasn't, or pleased that someone else obviously enjoys puns :)

It was probably my doing.

Token Evolution

New 08 Apr 2012 Asked by drsylvan 0 Comments

What brought about the shift from Bear tokens (Grizzly Fate, Caller of the Claw) to Wolf tokens (Master of the Wild Hunt, Wolfbriar Elemental) as the staple 2/2 green token? Avoiding overlap with Grizzly/Runeclaw Bears?

We tend to choose tokens based on the flavor at hand. We wanted to round out the werewolf tribe in Innistrad (because they were all on double-faced cards which restricted their numbers) so we made a bunch of wolves to play with them. It only make logical sense to also turn the green 2/2 token of the block into wolves. Note that this isn’t some permanent shift. Tokens like many aspects of Magic are ever evolving.
