From the Ashes

Nonbasic Hate Discussion

You said a while back that it’s hard to make nonbasic hate that punishes greedy decks without also punishing fairer ones. Why? Blood moon or ruination seem like they are inherently fair. The degree they hurt people is directly proportional to how greedy their land base is. If ruination is too extreme for your taste, from the ashes is an even less punishing card, effectively just being a mass field of ruin. How are these cards too punishing to fair land bases?

I’m not sure everyone would agree that Blood Moon is “fair”.

Phoenix Jokes

I remember you keep using the "we can't kill phoenixes no matter what we do" joke, but my favorite thing you said on the subject was the argument for why phoenixes had to be in red: IT'S A BIRD MADE OUT OF FIRE.

The “we can’t kill Phoenixes” joke itself can’t be killed. : )It keeps rising from the ashes.

Sacrifice Clues Flavor

"Sacrifice 3 Clues" - The flavour of this phrase reads really strangely: "Well sir, we've found this scrap of clothing, this nail file, and this matchbook cover." "Alright, good! Burn them all, and from the ashes bring me the killer's identity!"

Clues can be strung together to solve a mystery.

Phoenixes Versus Zombies

Do you think that phoenixes are mechanically different enough from zombies? Their "rising from the ashes" never strikes me as flavorful, just tied to the mechanical gimmick of every set.

They all fly, usually deal direct damage and are Red is probably enough of a difference.
