Acceptability of Color-shifted Requests

New 10 Mar 2021 Asked by ironchefravnica 52 Comments

Regarding designs, do I recall correctly that requesting a color-shifted version of an existing card is fair game? For instance, imagine Mana Tithe did not exist. Would asking for Force Spike shifted to white be ok, or would that count as unsolicited design?

You can ask for a color-shifted version of a card.

Modern Horizons Inclusions Process

New 10 Jun 2019 Asked by bossanova87 29 Comments

Mark, during the production of Modern Horizons, what was the creative process around deciding whether or not to include cards like Stifle and/or Force Spike into the Modern format?

It was a play design issue, not a vision design or set design issue.

Phyrexian Language Easter Egg

New 19 Apr 2017 Asked by haiddon 54 Comments

"The intent of the font is that it would look like our Phyrexian language promo, that it would seem to be in another language. Only on closer discovery as an Easter egg would you realize that the symbols had a connection to English." That sounds like a great idea, but that idea doesn't work well alongside brand new art for the card. imagine you reprinted force spike, with brand new art, and in a language nobody could read. people wouldn't have a frame of reference for knowing what the card was

Because they were iconic spells, we assumed the combination of mana cost and rules text would be enough information.

Planar Chaos Pie Fidelity

New 06 Nov 2014 Asked by slowishjohnnycube 34 Comments

Thanks to Planar Chaos, there are a number of effects that exist in Modern in the "wrong color," while the right-color version has never been reprinted. Two examples off the top of my head are Simian Spirit Guide/Elvish Spirit Guide (arguably) and Mana Tithe/Force Spike. Do these color pie violations bother you more than others? (They do me.)

Planar Chaos stretched the color pie but not to the point of undercutting the weakness of colors, so those don’t bother me nearly as much as cards that let color’s do things that by color definition they aren’t supposed to be able to do.
