Re: chewing gum in boosters. An important reminder for readers that aren't aware: the United States FDA may consider gum to be food, but the Unhinged card Fat Ass does *not*.

Dear Mark, Everyone has heard the cards are delicious, and you do your best to spread the word not to eat them. Do you know who first spread the word that the cards are delicious? Maybe that person feels guilty about telling everyone the cards are delicious. Maybe they had a change of heart and want to correct course and tell people not to eat the cards. Maybe it was YOU Mark Rosewater! What say you?

Regarding the advice your lawyers gave you on "Fat Ass," I have to ask: Do they review every card in every magic set? Or just the silver bordered sets because the higher-ups know you're a scallywag trying to push the boundaries

Legal reviews silver border sets because we tend to push boundaries a lot more than black border Magic.

It is not. Chewing gum, for example, does not help you with Fat Ass. (I’m referring to the Unhinged card.)

Nope. In the FAQ, gum is ruled as not food. Probably one of the biggest debates R&D had about Unhinged.

According to the FDA, gum *is* food. Does that fall under the rule that lets laws override rules?

We consulted with the FDA and they were fine with saying gum is not food for purposes of Fat Ass.

That is correct. You have to eat food. And according to the Unhinged FAQ, gum is not food.

The world will never know. Okay, it will. It was silliness. My lawyer is now forcing me to stress that really you shouldn’t eat the cards. Really, they’re not for eating.

Gatherer and Silver-Bordered Cards

Why can't Gatherer post rulings on silver-bordered cards? I'd lose my crap if there was an official ruling on Fat Ass that said "Gum isn't food."

You might not believe this, but this question sucked up more R&D time than all the other questions on this list combined. Is gum food? Do you “eat” it? Meaty issues. The debates went on for days. In the end, it became clear that the majority of R&D members don’t consider gum food and that an even larger group feel gum isn’t eaten. But what ultimately tipped the scales was the card itself. Fat Ass wants you to keep eating to keep him big. Chewing gum is just too easy. So, I make a ruling from on high – no gum!
