Dream Halls

InQuest Scrye Anecdote

New 12 Nov 2017 Asked by silpheed-tandy 52 Comments

tell me a small story about InQuest or Scrye magazines?

Inquest and Scry were contemporary magazines of The Duelist all of which had a lot of Magic content. My favorite story is about Inquest. Whenever a set came out, they would write about it, grading each card (Necropotence famously was first graded with one star), and pick the worst card in the set. The goal was to stir up conversation, so they liked picking bold choices. When Stronghold came out, the chose Dream Halls as the worst card. A few years later we had to ban it. : )

Casting Lands Rules

"No. If we had an Oracle update [for Richard Garfield, Ph.D.], it would say “cast”." - Would I still be able to cast a Dryad Arbor as though it were Ancestral Vision by discarding a green card if I controlled both Richard Garfield and Dream Halls?

Lands do not have mana costs.

Dream Halls Trivia

Hey Mark, its my birthday today and I was hoping I could get some trivia on my favorite card Dream Halls. Do you have anything interesting on it or about stronghold in general?

When Dream Halls first came out in was voted the worst card in Stronghold by Inquest magazine. My reply was “I probably wouldn’t have chosen a card we might have to one day ban.” (Which we later did.) Happy Birthday!

Holiday Song Correction

For shame, Maro! It's "Deck the Hall", not "Deck the Halls". The common misconception being that it's talking about hallways, when in fact it is talking about a large dining hall.

But the Magic card is Dream Halls.

Dream Halls and Lazav

New 22 Aug 2015 Asked by xenosinfinity 48 Comments

Some of my friends have recently drawn me into Magic through the PC games, and since my birthday was on the 12th of August, one of them has offered to buy me the Dimir starting pack from Gatecrash as a birthday present. Thing is, I've also ordered some cards to supplement the deck... Would you happen to have any interesting information about Dream Halls or Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, sir?

When Dream Halls was first released in Stronghold, inquest Magazine (a magazine that used to exist about gaming and focused a lot on Magic) called it “the worst card in the set”. Eighteen months later it was banned. Happy Birthday!

Dream Halls Likelihood

Any chance we will ever see a card like or similar to Dream Halls in standard rotation?

Unlikely. Not paying mana costs is dangerous. (And yes, we do do it on rare occasion.)

I did.

Dream Halls Cost Error

New 24 Jan 2013 Asked by pookel 5 Comments

Dream Halls and Crosis only cost 3U? What am I missing here?

I’m sure it’s a typo. I’ll check on it when I get to work. EDIT: There’s an error in Gatherer/Oracle that’s truncating any mana cost starting with 3U. The problem is currently getting fixed.

Functional Errata Policy

Regarding functional errata, while you don't do it on purpose anymore, it still sometimes happens accidentally. For example, Dream Halls and Crosis now officially only cost 3U.

It occasionally happens indirectly or when we are trying to recapture the original intent of a card, but it’s something in modern day we strive hard not to do. (Note that this was not always true; there was a time we made a lot of errata that affected functionality.)

Dream Halls Interaction

How does Dream Halls work with Richard Garfield PhD?

The Dream Halls will let you play the spell for free by discarding a card that shares a color with it. The card still has the mana cost so Richard Garfield lets you turn it into any card that shares that mana cost (provided, of course, you hadn’t already cast it this game).
