Do or Die

Cycle Completion

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 30 Comments

A break from all the Unfinity questions. I recently discovered that there was a cycle of nonpermanent spells from Invasion, where the name was of the format “X or Y,” and the ability involved separating something into two piles: Death or Glory in white, everyone’s favorite Fact or Fiction in blue, Do or Die in black, Bend or Break in red… But green never got such a card. Do you think that cycle will ever be completed?

Those were cards were nicknamed “divy” cards, and there were two white, one blue, one black, and two red. It wasn’t an almost cycle.

Pile/Choose Mechanic Inquiry

Why so little use of the pile/choose mechanic like Fact or Fiction and Do or Die? Its a mechanic that encourages players getting better at the game , is sort of a sub game, and rewards bettter players. Are they very difficult to develop, too complex or give the better player too much of an advantage? There seems to be infinite design space there so it puzzling there have not been many more.

R&D refers to it as “divy”. There’s not as much usable design space as you might think. It also takes a lot of time to execute.

Silver Border Wordplay

In Silver Border, do different words which are coincidentally the same in different languages count as the same word. That is, could I use an Urza's Hot Tub to swap a "Zündstoff für die Sache" (Fuel for the Cause) for a "Do or Die" because of the shared word 'die'?

Yes, because in silver border you look at the actual physical word as spelled out on each card.

Have we seen the last of the divvy mechanic? (Do or Die, Bend or Break, Fact or Fiction, etc)

I doubt it.

Are "do or die" extra turn cards like Final Fortune still in Red's section of the Color Pie

I believe so.
