Breaching Hippocamp

Flying Card Confusion

New 25 Dec 2015 Asked by dukkhasatva 22 Comments

To the person confused that people mistake cards for having flying: the problem is people misremembering what cards do. It gets played against you in limited, and you think you know what it does so you don't reread the card, but you're wrong. A recent exemple is Breaching Hippocamp, that looked like it was flying.

A fine example. We try very hard to make all flying creatures look like they fly and vice versa. When we mess up, it causes confusion.

Flying Spirits Query

Do ghosts necessarily have to fly? I guess the art would have to make it very clear (seeing as loads of people, self included, assumed Breaching Hippocamp could fly), but how much do you think flying is tied to ghosts?

It’s tied to ghosts when you’re trying to do ghost tropes. We do make plenty of nonflying spirits and some appear in red.

Misinterpreted Creature Art

This one continues the subject of players thinking creatures have flying. In my experience with Theros limited, I and many others frequently thought that Breaching Hippocamp had flying. I doubt we expected that from a horse fish. What does R&D make of information like this (assuming it's confirmed by valid research), and what is done about it?

That issue has to do with the art. We have to be very careful that fliers look like the fly and non fliers don’t.

Dwarves in Blue

In your recent statement about Dwarves not being "smart" enough to be Blue, does that mean that Aquus Stead, Air Servant, Aetherling, Armored Cancrix, Bane Alley Broker, Benthic Giant, Breaching Hippocamp, Chorus of the Tides, etc. are all smart? In the past you've noted that just because something is blue doesn't necessarily make it smart. Dwarves are artificers, which fits into Blue pretty well, and can be closely associated with Equipment (just like Blue).

I was making a joke. I do not think dwarves are particularly blue as they do not traditionally seek out knowledge nor tend to play up any of blue’s key attributes. Without a major reworking of what dwarves represent, I feel they are mostly red and white.

Card Design Insight

When you designed cards like Triton Tactics and Breaching Hippocamp, did you already have Inspired in mind or was it just a happy coincidence?

We were aware that inspired (or something similar) was most likely coming.

Art Misinterpretation

Please pass this to the creative team: I love Breaching Hippocamp's art, but it really looks like it has flying! Me and all of my friends played him wrong until we noticed!!

One of the reasons we don’t show swimming underwater a lot. It looks like flying.
