Errata Comparison: Phyrexian vs Legendary

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by j-waffles 41 Comments

People have been talking about mechanical errata recently in regards to potentially changing rampage, and have been talking about the mass Errata that phyrexians got in regards to legends with that errata, so now seems like the perfect time to ask my question:You’ve said in the past that things like the mass errata to make things phyrexian is ok as functional errata because they were always phyrexian in flavor. That being the case, would legendary errata be acceptable for proper nouns from ABUR, Arabian Nights, and Antiquities, since they are from before “legendary” was even a thing? Aladdin, Ali from Cairo, King Suleiman, Bazaar of Baghdad, and Library of Alexandria are all proper nouns. 4 of those 5 reference people/places from the real world, which we know from the portal sets do constitute the “legendary” super type. You could argue that Bazaar and Library see to much play in extended formats to get such major functional errata, but the “phyrexian” errata to glistener elf and blighted agent turned infect from a fringe deck to basically unplayable in modern. I know you guys avoid mechanical errata if ever possible because it confuses new players, but I’d be willing to bet new players would be more confused hearing “Aladdin is not considered a proper noun. Nor is Baghdad” than they would be hearing “that card from 25+ years ago has been changed” especially considering many other old cards from around that time have had serious errata to their printed text that changes some of them SEVERELY. I guess my question is just: why is the mass errata of phyrexian acceptable, when it is changing things that were always phyrexians in flavor to be so mechanically, but an errata of proper nouns to be legendary from ABUR, Arabian nights, and antiquities not acceptable, when it would be changing things that were always proper nouns in flavor to be so mechanically?

Making a creature Phyrexian does impact how other cards interact with it, but it doesn’t change how the card functions in a vacuum. Adding legendary to a card does, and pretty severely in any 4-of format.

Request for 'Father' Card

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by msprzegaj 84 Comments

Mark, Today I have become a father :) Can I get a “maybe” on a creature card with “father” in its name? There are mothers (and smothers), sons (and arsons), sisters (and resisters), daughters, brothers and children, but neither Memnarch, nor Angrath are fathers by their cardname... And Bazaar of Baghdad doesnt count!

Had Karn been a legendary creature rather than a planeswalker in New Phyrexia, he was going to be called Father of the Machines.
As far as s new card with “Father”, Maybe. : )

Vintage Masters Selection

Why is City In A Bottle in Vintage Masters?

I believe they were trying to get cards on Magic Online that see some Vintage play. I believe that card is a sideboard card against decks running Bazaar of Baghdad.

Philosophy on Fetch Lands

New 09 Aug 2013 Asked by tanisfahr 6 Comments

I believe I've read that y'all feel all lands should be able to produce mana. Presumably that means y'all are moving away fetch lands (like Evolving Wilds). If I'm mistaken, my apologies. But if not, would you please explain the reasoning behind this? On a separate note, I really enjoy your articles, blog, and podcasts. Thanks!

Fetch lands are fine because they fetch you mana. What we are moving away from, or more accurately moved away from over fifteen years ago, are making lands that have absolutely nothing to do with mana (see early Magic with lands such as Bazaar of Baghdad, Diamond Valley or Maze of Ith.)

Arabian Nights Power Level

New 21 Jun 2013 Asked by arealnewby-blog 6 Comments

Is it just me, or are the creatures in Arabian Nights surprisingly close to modern power levels? Actually a pretty fair set for power level if you toss out Library.

We wouldn’t make Bazaar of Baghdad today, but yes overall the power level of the set is fair by today’s standards.

Balanced Card Designs

Is it possible to make 'fixed' balanced versions of bazaar of Baghdad or library of alexandria?

Just remember that Wasteland was my fixed version of Strip Mine.
