Augury Adept Reevaluation

New 19 Nov 2023 Asked by pootdspencer 26 Comments

A few years ago back in June of 2019, you told us that Augury Adept was a color break for white at the time, and that the card has a gold white/blue effect rather than a hybrid white/blue effect. Is Augury Adept still a color pie break through the lens of the modern white color pie? Over the last few years, white's color pie has been expanded to have limited draw effects of "do a thing, get a card, but only once per turn" like Dusk Legion Dualist and Bennie Bracks. it feels like a combat damage trigger might be within that realm now. Is that the case or is it still a break?(Side note, I like the way you all tackled the white card draw issue in a way that feels super white. Well done.)

We’ve revamped white’s ability to draw a lot since 2019.

Augury Adept Discussion

Is Augury Adept in-pie for White now? It has to attack to get the card, which naturally limits it to once per turn. (I know the life gain means it's still a problem in Blue).

Let’s call it a bend.

Is Augury Adept a break for white?

Yes. That’s a traditional white/blue gold card not a white/blue hybrid card color pie wise.

Hybrid vs Gold

bangingyourheadonthestars asked: Any examples of shadowmoor hybrids that should have been gold?I’ll let the Question Marks field this one. - Correction: Augury Adept couldn't pass for white due to the card advantage nor blue due to the life gain. Gold it should have been.

Correct.

Hybrid Cards Classification

It seems hybrid used to do things like gold. Does Augury Adept break the color pie now?

Hybrid is supposed to be effects that either color could do. Traditional gold cards are effects that the colors can only do together. There are a number of hybrid cards that should have been traditional multicolor. This mostly happen in Shadowmoor block due to the high volume of hybrid spells.

Hybrid Card Misuse

I have a sad from midterms. Could you please give me trivia on my favorite color pie violator of all time, Augury Adept, to cheer me up?

Augury Adept is a good example of how hybrid can be done incorrectly. It has two different abilities, one from each color. That makes it a white/blue gold card not a hybrid card. One of the problems with doing a set with half hybrid is this happened a bit. Hybrid design is very hard. That card, by the way, was made during development and not design.  I hope you feel better.

Shadowmoor Hybrid Cards

On Shadowmoor, I saw the bigger problem being hybrid cards that felt multicolor. (Augury Adept, looking at you.)

It was a problem but not a major one and not something causing structural issues.
