You Make The Card

Proliferate Technology and Counter Types

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 11 Comments

You could make an eternal Giant Fan variant that removes a counter from one thing and adds a counter to another *of a type that's already on it*, right? That's just Proliferate-adjacent technology which we've had for years. The issue only arises when you make the card able to care about arbitrary counters the card *might* be able to have?

Yes, you can create another of a counter already on a card. Understanding potential is much more difficult.

Card Creation Hopes

New 26 May 2024 Asked by xenobladexfan 10 Comments

Hey Mark! Happy birthday! I've been told that WotC used to have a design competition among the MTG community to design a new card for a set. Is there any way this could be brought back, or are there too many legal complications and steps to take to accomplish it?

It wasn’t a competition. It was called “You Make the Card” and it was the whole community working together, mostly through a lot of voting, to make a card. Perhaps one day we’ll do it again.

Improv Troupe Suggestion

Someone suggested something like this earlier, but I think WotC having an Improv troupe called "You Make The Card" that puts on shows at Gencon would be fun.

Crowdsourced Card Design

New 17 May 2024 Asked by karric 35 Comments

Would You Make the Card be any easier if instead of every card stat being voted on, it was just the general idea of the card? Like "legendary Vampire + cares about X + modern format" and then your team fleshes it out? Maybe you could do several cards at the same time with this approach?

There are definitely ways to make it easier to do, but I don’t want to do it in a way that takes away agency from the players. I don’t want We Make the Card (While You Watch).

Public Card Submissions

New 02 May 2024 Asked by aaaaaa123456789 33 Comments

If there was some magical way in which you people could receive card ideas from the general public without any future legal issues, would you be interested? Would you be overwhelmed? Or would you rather simply not receive any new cards from the outside even in that scenario?

We have done “You Make the Card”, so I have had the choice to see designs from the players. The biggest problem is a minuscule percentage of it is usable (meaning it’s something we’d make that we haven’t already thought of).

Plane Selection Process

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by tqmurdock 22 Comments

Could there be a "you pick the plane" similar to "you make the card" where you give the audience early teasers of a few potential cards, art, etc. from different planes that are possible in coming years and the most popular plane is a new one that gets 2 consecutive sets? I feel like if Bloomburrow had been part of such a thing you'd have been confident about a 2-set block for it.

There is a lot of art concepting world building that goes in before we get the type of art that excites players. And that world building happens after vision design is done. So, the timing of what you’re asking for doesn’t work well.

Card Creation Challenges

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by thehigherdissidency 27 Comments

While You Make The Card being difficult makes perfect sense, I am very curious *how* it's difficult.

There’s many ways (most of which are logistic), but I’ll focus on the biggest design one. Cards are designed to work in synergy with the rest of the cards, themes, and mechanics of the set. Making what’s essentially a random card fit organically is a huge ask.

Secret Lair Logistics

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by soranetworker 18 Comments

Would doing a "You make the card" as a Secret Lair make the logistics more feasible, or would it not really make a difference?

I think Secret Lair misses an important sense of it.

Community Card Design

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by nabistay 32 Comments

Have you ever thought of letting the blogatog readers "design" a card? Like through a series of polls? First poll could be card type, second poll colors, etc? You would control the polls, and thus limit what the mob develops to something sane

We’ve done that exact thing, although through the main site, not my blog. It was called “You Make the Card”. We’ve done it four times. It’s much harder to do than one would assume, which is why we haven’t done it in a while.

Designer Search Likelihood

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by wildcardgamez 46 Comments

What do you think will happen sooner, another "You Make the Card" or another "Great Designer Search"?

The latter. It is literally the most successful way we’ve found to find (vision) designers. The top three of all three got full time jobs at Wizards.

Community-Voted Themes

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by fehtc 33 Comments

Hey Mark! How likely is that wotc designs a set with themes/archetypes voted by the community?

We’ve done an event called “You Make the Card” where we let players vote on all the decisions of making a single card. The complexity of doing that makes me weary of doing something larger.

Player Design Event

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 31 Comments

Could there ever be a worldwide event where players could design cards for you to judge? Maybe the winner card being printed even if its in a unset?

The biggest problem (which we learned from doing “You Make the Card”) is it’s an enormous amount of work for a small payoff.

Solicited Designs

New 25 Jun 2023 Asked by freezyeazybreezy 31 Comments

do you ever solicit designs?

We have done events like “The Great Designer Search” and “You Make the Card” where we have solicited design.

Soliciting Designs Legally

New 21 Jun 2023 Asked by spartacusreturned 18 Comments

You're not allowed to look at unsolicited designs, but are you allowed to solicit designs?

Only in very narrow circumstances (things like “You Make the Card”).

Future of Card Creation

New 05 Jun 2023 Asked by judge-natedogg 31 Comments

When or If: You Make the Card 5

If. They are a crazy amount of work on our end and the playerbase, as a whole, hasn’t been as excited about them as we’d hoped.

Inspiration from Community Cards

New 23 May 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 37 Comments

Do you ever find inspiration for cards through custom cards from the community?

I’m not allowed to look at them as it’s unsolicited design. When we have been able to see amateur designs (through things like “You Make the Card”), I have been inspired.

Great Designer Search vs. YMtC

New 15 Nov 2022 Asked by suggested-name-nick 25 Comments

What's the challenge with you make the card that makes the clearly vary challenging Great Designer Searcher more likely?

I was asked which is more likely. The Great Designer Search has resulted in over ten designers being hired. You Make the Card has resulted in a handful of cards being made. The former is a bigger gain from a resource standpoint, so I thought it was more likely.

Future Design Events

Which would you say is currently more likely: another Great Designer Search or another You Make The Card?

The former.

Core Sets Impact

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by simicmimic 17 Comments

You’ve talked about the difficulty of making You Make the Card happen; does the demise of core sets add to this?

It doesn’t help.

Player Designed Mechanics

New 22 May 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 68 Comments

When/if…. A player designed mechanic? As in one people submit via a competition or similar.

Double strike was designed by a player for the first “You Make the Card”.
