Unburial Rites

Upsides in Cheaper Reanimation

New 26 Nov 2021 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 46 Comments

I just want to mention that Unburial Rites was highly played in Standard and Modern, and that 5 mana is a fine rate for reanimation if there is upside (flashback, in this case). I really liked Rescue from the Underworld and played it a lot in standard. I don't think we need cheaper reanimation, but it would be nice to see options with more upside.

I’ll see what other upsides we can add.

Flashback Cost Flavor

What's the flavor behind Flashback cards having a different color in its flashback cost than in its mana cost? Cards like Unburial Rites and Forbidden Alchemy confuse me.

It’s a similar flavor to a multicolor card but a little less. : )

Hybrid Cards Issue

I know hybrid in commander comes up on your blog often, but can you elaborate on your position of cards like Unburial Rites or Order // Chaos, which are non-hybrid cards that have just as many restrictions as a hybrid card? You've said that 'restriction breeds creativity' so why does this particular restriction not sit well with you?

I also say “Don’t fight human nature”. When creating game rules, it’s important that the rules work intuitively. It’s fine to have restrictions because all games do, but those restrictions shouldn’t come at the cost of the game working the way the players expect.
