Goat Card Juncture

New 28 Oct 2022 Asked by tqmurdock 33 Comments

Trading post has a special place as a role player in the first competitive control deck I ever played so I also have an affinity for goats. FYI in 2020 someone wrote a great "Top 10 Magic Goats" article

So much Goat love. Is that the GOAT Goat card?

Trading Post Flavor

Why is trading post an artifact and not a land? Seems like kind of a flavor fail.

Maybe it’s a literal post. : )

Trading Post Origins

I just want to congratulate whomever designed it on Trading Post. It is such a fun card to build and play with. Do you have any stories on how it came about?

I don’t know its origin but I think Doug Beyer, Magic 2013’s lead designer, made it.

Trading Post's Origin

Was Trading Post made specifically to give the artifacts from Scars block a final boost for a little while, or was it just an interesting top-down card?

Core sets specifically have cards that work with both the block two before it (that are leaving in three months), the block right before it and the block after it.

Card Templating Choices

Templating question: Why does cards like Divination say "draw X cards", while cards like Trading Post say "*you* gain X life"?

That’s a very good question. I don’t know. I’m going to ask at work today. UPDATE: Okay, I asked. Here’s the answer I got. Often there are cards that gain life gain that proved not clear enough to players who gains the life. For example - “Destroy target creature. Gain life equal to its toughness.” To make sure that it was clear the “you” got added. Card drawing never seemed to have that problem mostly because you seldom make your opponent draw cards. Many years ago, the templating team was syncing up templates and looked at how things were written historically. Most life gain cards were “you gain” while most card drawers were “draw”. They synced each up not worrying abut the contrast between them. That is why the two are written they way they currently are.

Goats and Color Pie

Trading Post was just previewed, hooray! One question: why are the Goats (and why were Shadowmoor's originally) white, and not green? Goats seem like pretty Green animals to me.

Domesticated animals tend to be white not green.
