Will we ever-ever see a reprint of Spirit of the Night? My all time favorite art.

Spirit of the Night is on the Reserved List, and thus, can’t get a reprint.

Nostalgic Sentiments

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by remasuri 50 Comments

Mark, you are always a optimistic and progress loving person, but can you also feel nostalgic about magic at times? When you look at cards from the nineties with the optics and card art of that time and when it was easy to wow players with cards like Spirit of the Night (which wouldn't rise many eyebrows nowadays)?

I’m very nostalgic.

Name Length Issue

Hi Maro, has there been a legendary creature or planeswalker that had to have its name changed because it was too long? If so, do you remember who it was and what the change was?

Mirage’s Spirit of the Night was supposed to be Spirit of the Nightstalker, but it didn’t fit and had to be shortened.

Urborg Panther Trivia

New 21 Nov 2015 Asked by infirm-of-purpose 25 Comments

Mr. Rosewater, It's my 29th birthday today and I've been playing Magic since 1998. Can you give me some trivia about my first favorite card, Urborg Panther?

Urborg Panther, Breathstealer and Feral Shadow were all printed as creature type Nightstalker. They come together to form Spirit of the Night. Originally it was Spirit of the Nightstalker but it wouldn’t fit so we had to shorten it. Happy Birthday!

Spirit of the Night Fact

I am currently celebrating my law school graduation. I wonder, could I in honor of this auspicious time get some interesting facts about a card I adore, Spirit of the Night?

The card was supposed to be Spirit of the Nightstalker but the name was too long to fit so we shortened it. Congratulations on the Graduation!

Un-set Pie Adherence

New 15 Jul 2014 Asked by oishsaysfroggy 12 Comments

Does Infernal Spawn of Evil (and the other one from the other Un-set) having First Strike constitute a color pie mistake you wouldn't want to repeat or is it okay because silver-border? (Or is it okay because it's some kind of weird reference to the First Strike black fatties of yore like Yawgmoth Demon and Spirit of the Night?) I ask because I believe you were lead design on the Un-sets so it can't be just that some pie infraction snuck by on someone else's watch.

Black is tertiary in first strike meaning it gets it infrequently.

Constructed Card Tuning

New 02 Jul 2013 Asked by danvogelsong 8 Comments

Most cards that reference other cards are made almost solely for limited (with the exception of Kaldra, The Unspeakable, and Spirit of the Night). Why aren't these cards tuned more for Constructed, where the likelyhoodof having the pieces is higher?

Constructed players really isn’t the target audience for most of these kinds of cards.

Card Summoning Mechanics

New 07 Oct 2012 Asked by veloxiraptor 10 Comments

How likely are we to see more cards that are specifically called out/summoned by other cards? Like Spirit of the Night, or the Kaldra equipment, or The Unspeakable, or even the mythic cycle from Shards of Alara. I like that feeling of "assembling the pieces."

We do them every once in a while. It’s not something we consciously decided to stop.
