Old Cards and New Subtypes

Re: card subtypes. I get the concern that older cards won’t have types that they”should” have but we can’t let the past constrain the future of the game right? Cards like pirate ship didn’t stop vehicles from being made. When instant/sorcery subtypes become relevant, there will be a set of cards that don’t work with them even though flavor wise they should. Is that really a problem?

I believe the second we make a Fire subtype, there will be a loud cry to make errata every fire flavored spell to have a Fire subtype.

What about a blue pirate ship that can shoot flak at drakes? Can that be a blue creature with reach?

The reason to do a mechanic shouldn’t be because you can come up with flavor for it. Flavor is pretty flexible. You can almost always come up with flavor.

Pirate Creature Typing

Why do cards like Rishadan Airship and Pirate Ship have creature types Human Pirate instead of Pirate Construct?

Because the cards are supposed to represent the pirates and not the ship. The ship isn’t a creature.
