Jumpstart vs Rebound

New 08 Dec 2018 Asked by kogar15 22 Comments

Just listened to the podcast on izzet and while i think jumpstart is a great fit did r&d ever consider rebound? It seems like a natural connection for the "spells matter" guild theme as well as being flavorful. And as jeskai showed in khans it wouldve made a decent bridge between izzet and boros. Though i while admit it wouldn't have played as closely with dimir, when it came to surveil and jumpstart. Rebound would fit great with the card advantage route that dimir and izzet share.

We talked about rebound. It wasn’t as synergistic as we wanted.

Planeswalkers Rarity Decision

Hi Mark, when assigning rarities in your "Reading the Designs" article, you immediately narrowed your options by assigning the two planeswalkers mythic rarity. Why is that? It kind of rubbed me the wrong way, it seems like there is a lot of design space open for planeswalkers of lower rarity. Even something as far as a common non-legendary planeswalker with two simple abilities. (maybe flavoured as an animal with a natural connection to the planes?) Why is this limitation so strong?

Planeswalkers are major drivers for the set and we only get a few, so it’s a pretty big deal to move them down in rarity. It’s not something I would have done on a design test.

Tutoring at Common

"We don't tend to do tutoring at common these days" Would Rampant Growth and similar cards be the exception? Both Natural Connection and Sylvan Scrying were in Battle For Zendikar?

Basic land tutoring is the one exception. Fair point.
