Core Sets' Absence

New 23 Mar 2023 Asked by suzkia 47 Comments

Hello MaRo, first off, I want to give a shout-out to the people who are writing the lore of MTG right now. I am a huge fan! MoM is hyping me up a lot, especially the bonus cards (I play Arena as well as Modern, so it's always cool to have extra cards haha). However, I've been wondering for a while if the rest of the MTG community feels the same way. I miss the core sets in Magic more and more, as I feel like they are part of the game's identity - at least that's my personal opinion. I wanted to ask you what led to their removal since Core Set 2021, and if I could make a wish for 2024 or 2025, it would be for Magic to have them again. Anyway, great job on the designs and thanks again for all the amazing new designs you give us!"

Not enough players were interested in buying it.

Mechanics of Garth One-Eye

New 13 Jun 2021 Asked by dude1818 40 Comments

I was going to ask how open-ended the Garth mechanic (copies of real cards) was, but then I realized I was just proposing Richard Garfield, Ph.D. Can a version of that card exist in black-border now?

No. Cards have to be referenced. You can make a wish that gets any card (or subset of cards) from outside the game (sideboards in tournaments).

Make A Wish Contest Info

New 22 Apr 2020 Asked by nedistro 28 Comments

Mark - Is there anything on the official MTG website about the Omaze - Make A Wish contest? There are a lot of people/websites/forums who don't believe it is "real" since there are no direct sources. Yes, you're on Make A Wish's twitter and some third party stuff, but why no Wizards announcement?

My assumption was there is one, but it’s possible with all the work from home craziness that it slipped between the cracks.

Just saw the Omaze - Make a wish contest. Cool idea. I hope you will do more of them!

Let’s see how this one goes.

Fae of Wishes Origin

New 19 Oct 2019 Asked by celestial-uran 33 Comments

What did Fae of Wishes look like in vision design?

It was a Faerie with “make a wish” (go get a card from outside the game) as an “enter the battlefield” effect.

Art of Grapple With

New 10 Aug 2016 Asked by lazcarno 75 Comments

"I did. I enjoy throwbacks in art." Then perhaps you can shed some light on this thing that's been bugging me: What is going on in the art of "Grapple With the Past?" It's clearly some kind of reference to "Make a Wish" from original Innistrad, but I (like so many citizens of Innistrad) can't make sense of what's happening.

In “Make a Wish”, a little girl, holding a stuffed bear, is tossing a coin in the well to make a wish. In “Grapple with the Past”, we see the stuffed bear at the bottom of the well implying bad things happened to the little girl.

Has WotC ever worked with the Make a Wish foundation?

Yes, on many occasions.

Fulfilling Charity Wishes

New 15 Apr 2014 Asked by niceguyimperial 32 Comments

A child from a charity that grants the last wishes of a child comes to you, and asks to see if you could grant his wish of going to wizards for the day. Would you do your best to help grant his wish, or does wizards not really do that kind of thing?

We have never turned down a Make a Wish or similar request.

Company Community Values

New 11 Jun 2013 Asked by time-elemental 14 Comments

Your CEO Greg Leeds is also a boardmember of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound. I know you personally take the 'make a wish foundation'-kids on tours through the building. I like the way the people at Wizards take their community responsabilities seriously. Is it a company policy?

It’s not company policy but it does speak volumes for the kind of company Wizards is and the types of people it attracts and hires.

Heartfelt Fan Interaction

New 03 Jun 2013 Asked by timebender13 38 Comments

With all these stories of how Magic has helped people, I have to ask: What's the best a fan has ever made you feel?

There are many stories but the one that came first to mind is this: Every other year we have a Make a Wish kid whose wish is to visit Wizards of the Coast. I’ve chosen to always play host for these and so I asked the brand person co-ordinating to specifically ask the kid what they wanted to do and their only request was to meet me. That was quite intense.

Make A Wish Privacy

New 31 Jul 2012 Asked by wshanks-blog 3 Comments

Your article on celebrity this week was very moving. Could you share any more information about the Make a Wish child? What was it like when you actually met him? What kind of a Magic player was he? Has he since passed away?

I keep this information private because I believe it’s not my information to share.

Thankful Survivor Message

New 24 Jun 2012 Asked by brokengaming 10 Comments

Hey, could you pass a message to some people for me? My name is Kenneth Carnes and I went to WotC in 2002 as part of a make a wish for my cancer diagnosis. I was mostly in the D&D section. I have really been trying to find a way to thank everyone for everything they did for me on that day. It really made it all worth it. Basically, let them know I turned out ok, and I will always remember what they did for me.

I’ll gladly pass this along. Do you remember any of the Wizards staff you might have met?

Random Card Selection

New 22 Sep 2011 Asked by fangfabio 0 Comments

What method do you recommend to pick a card at random (e.g., to discard to Desperate Ravings, or to retrieve with Make a Wish) when you don't have a dice?

Unless you are playing in a format with cards that care about graveyard order (Tempest block or earlier), you are allowed to shuffle your graveyard to draw a random card. If you are playing legacy or vintage, I would recommend a die. If you have an iPhone, my favorite dice rolling app is Mach Dice which lets you roll dice of any size regardless of actual physics.
