Reprinting Color Pie Breaks

New 23 Jun 2022 Asked by rwssr 38 Comments

If Stunted Growth and Ice Storm is so wildly out of color and big breaks in green, are they essentially reserved list cards?

We allow reprinting of color pie breaks as long as they don’t introduce them to new (major) tabletop formats. EDIT: Ice Storm is not a break. Green can destroy lands. We don’t do it a lot though.

Rationale Behind Ice Storm Absence

There are 3 cards not on the reserved list only printed in alpha beta unlimited, Camoflage, False Orders and Ice Storm. I understand why you won’t reprint the first 2, but why has ice storm never been reprinted? Land destruction is still in Green’s color pie.

Not at three mana.

Green Color Pie Examination

Is Tsunami still in Greens color pie? I realize power level is too high for Standard and the move from mass land destruction also pushes it further away. But just from a color pie perspective. The same question with Ice Storm, Thermokarst, Fallow Earth, Kudzu and the destroy non creature permanent cards?

No, green can’t do damage to players. It still can damage fliers though. EDIT: Oops, I was thinking of Hurricane. Green can still destroy lands, so destroying islands is in color pie. Being in color pie, doesn’t mean we’ll print it though.

Stone Rain Discussion

why isn't stone rain okay? sam stoddard last week wrote a list of alpha cards currently considered too powerful to print in a standard-legal set. stone rain and ice storm are conspicuously absent.

Stone Rain is the kind of spell, like Lightning Bolt, that we could do but require a lot of designing the environment around it to make it okay.
