Horizon Canopy Cycle

New 02 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 32 Comments

"The ones we liked how they played have been cycled out" Horizon Canopy (GW) got only the enemy cycle though, so we're stll missing the WU, UB, BR and RG sacrifice-to-draw lands. Any chance we'll see them?

Yes.

Future Sight Lands Completion

New 21 Sep 2017 Asked by andrewstirlingmacdonald 34 Comments

Do you see the completion of the Horizon Canopy cycle (or any of the Future Sight rare dual lands, for that matter) as more of an if, or more of a when?

I think we’ll eventually complete some of them. I’m skeptical we complete them all.

How likely is a horizon canopy reprint

Funny you should ask. The current Soup file is all Horizon Canopys and a Desert.

Interesting Lands

New 07 Feb 2014 Asked by l0cke17 20 Comments

Why do you never print any interesting lands anymore? Things with effects like Glacial Chasm, Maze of Ith, Volrath's Stronghold, Karakas, or Horizon Canopy? Unique effects like those on lands, especially ones which don't produce mana, are one of the most interesting deck-building aspects. It allows another entire avenue of resource management to be explored, trading your ability to make land-drops for an effect, and there seems to be no support for those kind of effects at all anymore.

We decided long ago that lands needed to produce mana (or go get you mana) as we want to keep a clear identity between lands and mana. Also, we tend to limit how many other abilities lands have because it’s very hard to track what your opponent’s lands can do.

Scryland Cycle Disappointment

New 06 Sep 2013 Asked by thewormturns 26 Comments

Mark, I love your designs and respect you as a designer, but I am seriously disappointed with the scryland cycle at rare. There are better ways to slow down a format (a cycle based on Horizon Canopy for instance), heck you could have just not printed a rare cycle. Not since Kamigawa have we seen such poor rare dual lands.

The dual land puzzle is something much larger than any one set. Development works very hard to make sure that the lands necessary for the environment exist but not make it too easy to splash too many colors. I can say that in discussions with development that these lands read worse than they play. Development does expect them to see tournament use.

Horizon Canopy Design

Did you oppose Horizon Canopy? I know green gets card draw, but paying life for mana is decidedly black.

Green is supposed to involve creatures in its card drawing.
