Eternal Dragon

Color Allocation for Reanimating Mechanics

New 21 May 2022 Asked by mois113 37 Comments

Wait, if black/green are the self reanimating colors and Eternal Dragon is a break, then why does white get mechanics like Embalm, Eternalize and Disturb, on high volume even?

White can reanimate other creatures. It’s number two at reanimating. It’s not supposed to be on creatures reanimating themselves as that’s black and green (and red on Phoenixes). We let mechanics do it which is why the three above mechanics did it, but we don’t let white do it on individual cards much like blue got Embalm but doesn’t get it on individual creatures.

Self-Reanimating Color Assignment

"Black and green are the two colors that do [self-reanimating] on non-Phoenixes." What about white? Is Eternal Dragon a bend/break in modern color pie?

White can reanimate other things, but isn’t supposed to reanimate itself. Eternal Dragon is out of color pie (and was at the time, but there was only so many of me pre-Council of Colors).

Reprinting Eternal Dragon

Hi, idk if you expected this message but thank you, thank you, thank you for reprinting Eternal Dragon. It was one of my favorite cards in Legacy back in the late 00's and seeing its classic art again sent me over the moon. It instantly reminded me of better times and I'm really grateful that people might be playing it, even casually, once more.

I’ll pass along your happiness to the team that chose to reprint it.

White's Graveyard Return

"White doesn’t bring itself back from the graveyard." - Does this mean that Eternal Dragon is a bend? What about the white Embalm creatures?

Embalm creatures were a conscious bend. Eternal Dragon was an outlier when it was printed.
