Drogskol Captain

Self-Inclusive Protection

Almost all cards that grant hexproof or indestructibility to a type of cards don't include themselves, like Drogskol Captain and Knight Exemplar. These provide those 'shields down' moment you have talked about. What is your opinion on cards like Darksteel Forge and the new Avacyn that include themselves in their protection?

I feel like the former should be the default but it’s okay every once in a while to make the latter especially on very expensive cards which cannot come out until late game.

+n/+n Card Design

When making creature cards that use the "other [type of creatures] get +n/+n" wording, why is that chosen over simply giving the creature a knock down in power and toughness and then saying "[type of creatures] get +n/+n?" For example why not have Drogskol Captain be a 1/1 that gives +1/+1 to all spirits?

There are two problems with that: 1) It requires for the player to constantly do math. 2) It makes the card look much weaker than it actually is. In general, we try to make cards look as good as they can.

Drogskol Captain Morality

If white spirits on Innistrad are benign and blue ones are malevolent, is Drogskol Captain a good or bad guy?

He’s conflicted.

Hexproof in Blue

First Invisible Stalker and Geist of Saint Traft, now Drogskol Captain. Are you underestimating the ability in blue or did you want it to make a splash to show its new home?

Untargetability has always been a blue and green ability. When we made that ability shroud both colors were given it. When shroud was replaced with hexproof that also went to both colors because it was the way we were doing untargetability.
