Card Name Tropes

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by horsecrash 30 Comments

Mark, I'm a big horror fan, but I'm not sure about how blatant and trope-y some of these card names are. I mean, seriously, "Black Cat"? "Bump in the Night"? "Creepy Doll"? "Evil Twin"? I don't think this "Innistrad" plane is going to be a hit... ;)

Media References Favorites

New 24 Nov 2022 Asked by jared-the-fool 46 Comments

Have there been references to external media within cards? If so, do you have a favourite?

One of my favorite references was the card Creepy Doll in original Innistrad. It was a nod to singer Jonathan Coulton.

Exciting Small Details

I'm casting my lot for Birthday Trivia! What's the most excited you've ever been for a small detail you either got to change or got to keep? (Barring that, if nothing comes to mind, what do you think is the mechanic with the most complexity within the last five years?)

I got to make reference in Innistrad to a singer I like. (Creepy Doll - Jonathan Coulton) Mutate is the most complex mechanic of the last five years.Happy Birthday!

Non-employee Vanity Cards

New 10 Apr 2018 Asked by auartic 44 Comments

Is there a name for "vanity cards" that are not of people who work on the game, and are they also not done anymore?

We do Easter Eggs that make reference of pop culture on rare occasion. Innistrad, for example had one card that Referenced Plants vs. Zombies (Grave Bramble) and knethat referenced singer Jonathan Coulton (Creepy Doll).

My Monday column mentions “Skullcrusher Mountain”. : )

Favorite Easter Egg

In honor of Easter, what's your favorite hidden Easter Egg in a Magic card?

The Innistrad Plants vs. Zombie nod (Grave Bramble) and Jonathan Coulton nod (Creepy Doll) are both very cool.

Can a black bordered set have multiple cards with creepy doll's pseudo deathtouch?

I wouldn’t want that on many cards.

Subtle Pop References

Is Magic past the point of making pop culture references?

Not when we can do them subtly like Innistrad with Grave Bramble or Creepy Doll.

Vanity Card Criteria

New 28 Apr 2015 Asked by doopboopdoop 31 Comments

Would a reference to someone long dead still be considered a vanity card? Like say a Bram Stroker reference in Innistrad.

Referencing pop culture or public figures isn’t considered a vanity card. Innistrad, for example, referenced “Creepy Doll”, a song by Jonathan Coulton, and Plants vs. Zombies.

Stuffy Doll in Innistrad

Was Stuffy Doll considered for a reprint in Innistrad? The flavor seems spot-on for the "creepy doll" trope.

We already had Creepy Doll.

Creepy Doll Origin

New 12 Oct 2014 Asked by stupidthreats 40 Comments

Is Creepy Doll a reference to the card of the same name from Wizards-owned property Betrayal at House on the Hill?

It was designed as a reference to the Jonathan Coulton song.

Creepy Doll Inspiration

New 25 Jul 2014 Asked by mymtgdreamz 60 Comments

I love the card Creepy Doll because of the song named Creepy Doll by Jonathon Coulton. Have you ever heard it?

I made the card Creepy Doll specifically because of the song. I’m a huge Jonathan Coulton fan. It and Grave Bramble (inspired by Plants vs. Zombies) were my two Easter Eggs in Innistrad.

Musician Recommendation

New 07 Jul 2014 Asked by coglineerro 40 Comments

I wanted to take a moment to let you know, you introduced me to my favorite musician. Your article where you explained the origin of Creepy Doll got me listening to Jonathan Coulton and he is definitely my favorite. Did you know he is the house musician for NPR's Ask Me Another?

Then Mission Accomplished. If anyone else out there has never listened to Jonathan Coulton, I urge you to give him a listen.

Easter Eggs vs Vanity Cards

New 28 Apr 2014 Asked by tewhit 20 Comments

Do things like George Fan's zombie-eating Hydra art mean that the mood towards "vanity cards" might be shifting a bit internally? I love the little nods and references MTG can get out of that space.

We are open to Easter eggs (ala Innistrad’s Grave Bramble and Creepy Doll) that reference pop culture. Those are different than vanity cards which reference the person making the card.

Easter Egg Card Hopes

New 28 Jul 2013 Asked by totheendofsin-blog 18 Comments

So with you being a fan of Jonathan Coulton, what are the chances of a card called Skullcrusher Mountain?

The trick to Easter Egg cards like that is they have to not seem odd if you don’t get the reference. Creepy Doll made sense in gothic horror world. Skullcrusher Mountain is a little more of a challenge.

I am a fan of Jonathan Coulton and Creepy Doll was my nod to his work (and obviously one song in particular).

Player Feedback

New 11 Oct 2012 Asked by wereoctopus-deactivated20181203 4 Comments

Does R&D measure player feedback on shoutout cards like Grave Bramble and Creepy Doll? If so, how well did they go down, and can we expect a continued trickle of them?

The public liked them. If we find similar things in the future, things that fit in but subtly make a pop culture reference, I’m sure we’ll include them.

Vanity Cards Trends

New 03 Aug 2012 Asked by chantryg 4 Comments

The Jayemdae Tome was named for someone who's initials are JMD, Telim' Tor is an acronym for "Mr. Toilet" (which makes me laugh so very much). Any more recent names or characters that have funny little quirks in their names that you'd be willing to share? I realize you're the head designer and therefore not responsible for naming, but I figured you might have a story or two to share.

We refer to those cards as vanity cards as they are referencing someone behind the scenes. We stopped doing vanity cards many years ago. I personally like them and think they have value (I feel they help create a personal bond between creators and players), but it wasn’t my call. The thing we do now are Easter eggs like Creepy Doll (a reference to a Jonathan Coulton song) or Grave Bramble (a nod to Plants vs. Zombies). The rule on these cards is they cannot sacrifice quality for the reference so the player not in the know would have just a good opinion of the card as any other Magic card.
