Chief of the Edge

Chief of the Edge

What does Chief of the Edge do that requires it to also be black? I ask in consideration of Question 28. As far as I can see, an anthem is something that could be done in only white.

We *try* to make all multicolored cards mechanically reflect all colors, but it can’t always be done while meeting other constraints of the set. They’ll get tagged by the Council of Colors, but are allowed to exist if there isn’t an easy fix that works for the set. Chief of Edge isn’t that though. It’s a multicolor signpost for a white/black Warrior typal theme. Both colors can grant power to its creatures. Yes, white does it more often, and usually grants all its creatures while black pumps black subsets. It could have been hybrid from a color pie perspective, but most signposts are multicolored.

Creature Design Philosophy

How would you respond to the claim that having creatures like Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Avatar of the Resolute, Chief of the Edge, etc. with power and toughness equal to or greater than their mana cost and all upsides dumbs down the game? I'd personally rather see creatures of this size to mana cost ratio with creative drawbacks that make you think and build around them like Erithizon or Rotting Giant.

I would respond that I fundamentally disagree. The game isn’t a deeper game without Savannah Lions.

Uncommons Per Set

Do you think it would be possible to see a undo of the increase in the number of uncommons per set? My experience so far has been somewhat negative. I feel like it is harder to draft with a specific build-around uncommon now. Uncommons that support and push archetypes of a draft format are still fine currently (ex. Chief of the Edge) but it feels like the unique strategies that rely on seeing multiples of the same uncommon, like Skywise Teachings or Goblinslide, are harder to draft successfully.

The problem was 60 was getting us too punched and we weren’t able to address all the different audiences. Also interestingly, some players enjoy variance in draft (getting to play with different cards) more than consistency.
