Charming Prince

Completing Cycles

New 29 Jan 2024 Asked by vedalkensamurai 50 Comments

Would you complete a mega-mega-cycle even if it was started unintentionally? I'm waiting for the green version of Charming Prince, Callous Bloodmage, Aether Channeler, and Charming Scoundrel.

It depends on how much players believe it’s a cycle.

Charming Cycle Potential

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by natew000 44 Comments

Since I don’t think I’ve seen it asked yet, I feel obligated to get this out of the way:Does Charming Scoundrel indicate that Charming Prince might become a cycle?(And if you ask if that’s something we all would like to see, I’ll say “sure!”)

Charming Scoundrel is definitely a nod to Charming Prince. Not everything needs to be a cycle though.

Royal vs. Princess Feedback

New 06 Sep 2023 Asked by ne4782 81 Comments

Tiny bit of feedback, I think I understand the reasoning, but 'Royal' really doesn't have the same resonance as 'Princess.' There's something fun and whimsical about making your giant monster or you tiny rat a princess that a royal doesn't have, and royal covers a wider variety of tropes (e.g. the stoic king, the evil queen, the charming prince) that washes out the specific meaning. Should've stuck with the princess!

A) We wanted to hit a wider range of tropes.B) Gendered language can reinforce stereotypes that can be harmful.

It is.

Regarding whether White can bounce stuff it owns, Charming Prince does that already.

Good point.

Eldraine Design Proudness

New 24 Jan 2020 Asked by shivandragonhorde 41 Comments

Throne of Eldraine has become my favorite set. Is there a card in it you have designed I could get you to sign? I know it’s a collaborative effort, but are there some you see your obvious finger prints on?

Charming Prince is the card I had a hand in that I’m proudest of.

Charming Prince Query

New 31 Dec 2019 Asked by natew000 42 Comments

So now that we have Charming Prince, I’m guessing you’ve gotten a few asks about when we’re going to see Commanding Prince, right? 😁

I made a “Tales from the Pit” comic with that very joke.

White's Card Advantage

New 01 Dec 2019 Asked by thoalmighty 56 Comments

Could an approach to white’s card advantage be spells that just do more? Stuff like Charming Prince (a body + filtering), Cavalier of Dawn (body + removal + recursion), and so on? If white gets efficient, but not versatile, removal, could you try building that efficiency into other aspects of white?

That’s possible.

Eldraine Name Punniness

New 13 Oct 2019 Asked by vickysaurus 32 Comments

Did you have anything to do with the card names in Throne of Eldraine? Their punnyness is off the charts.

There are a few names, like Charming Prince, that got created in vision design and never changed, but mostly the names were created by the team that named the set, run by the creative team.

Appreciation for Puns

Oh. "Question Mark". That took me an embarrassingly long time to get. Anyway, I just want to say that I greatly admire your patience in managing this blog.

I enjoy puns that take a while to get. : )Squee’s Toy, Charming Prince and Drive to Work are all mine.

Is Charming prince suppose to be the new thing white gets? Multiple-choice White ETB effects? I like it.

Charms effects aren’t new for white.

For the 80's reference, was Charming Prince ever Adam-ant? : )

No, it was always Charming Prince because the pun is awesome.

White and Scry Ability

New 23 Sep 2019 Asked by ending-one-blog 47 Comments

I love charming prince! His abilities feel like things that are at the core of white. Will we see more scrying in white now or is this a one time thing?

White has always had access to scry. I think we’re dipping our toe into scrying for a little more.

Gender Representation Tropes

New 14 Sep 2019 Asked by thasgar 39 Comments

Hello MaRo, I'm loving Throne of Eldraine spoilers, and am super excited for prerelease. You're doing a great job! Anyway, what caused the gender neutral name on Wicked Guardian in comparison to Charming Prince, Faerie Guidemother, and Beloved Princess? Doesn't Magic try to go mostly gender neutral on non-legendary creatures (Angels, Demons, and Enchantresses aside)?

The tropes of fairy tales are pretty gendered, so we leaned into a little more than normal. We did work hard about being careful with ones that pushed a negative connotation.

Proud Card Name

New 11 Sep 2019 Asked by thesoundofdrumming-blog-blog 74 Comments

Has the card with the name you were really proud of making been spoiled yet? If not, will you tell us when it is?

Yes. It was Charming Prince.

Charming Prince Design

New 10 Sep 2019 Asked by righteousforest 66 Comments

Loud groan followed by ethusiastic high-five for whoever designed Charming Prince.

I designed the original card - name and “enter the battlefield” charm ability, but what the effects were had to change. I’ll tell the full story in my card-by-card article.

White's Scry Ability

New 10 Sep 2019 Asked by blazeunicycle 54 Comments

Is Charming Prince's Scry 2 ability when it enters the battlefield White's minor change? Is White gaining the ability to Scry for larger amounts?

That wasn’t what I was referring to although I support white scrying for more cards.
