Turtle Trivia

Hi Mark. My birthday was in August, but due to Tumblr shenanigans I wasn't able to send you a question. Now that I can, could I please get some trivia on turtles or tortoises in Magic?

Calcite Snapper’s playtest name was Convertible Turtle. We tried to make that the printed name, but were unsuccessful.Happy Belated Birthday!

Did we ever learn what the Convertible Turtle was or is that not out yet?

It was Calcite Snapper from Worldwake.

Designing Creature Cards

Did you design Sphinx of Jwar Isle or Calcite Snapper? Those are two of my favorite creatures ever.

I did not do Sphinx of Jwar Isle but I very much did do Calcite Snapper. That card will forever be known to me by its playtest name - Convertible Turtle.

Common Ability Placement

New World Order Question. Under NWO rules, is the "About Face" mechanic (switching Power and Toughness) still at common, or was it moved up the ladder? We had Calcite Snapper, but it had Shroud which brilliantly polishes the card complexity-wise, so i don' t know if it counts. I ask this because if the About Face mechanic is still at common, it seems fitting to be the longed for link between blue and red common creatures.

We tend to avoid doing it at common as a default but we’ll make exceptions every once in a while. You’re correct that we added hexproof to make the swapping have less issues.
