Counting Princess Cards

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 5 Comments

Of the over 27,000 Magic cards made, only four have the word Princess in their name. The first Princess Lucrezia came out in Legends back in 1994. Two are from Eldraine, our fairy tale inspired plane: Beloved Princess and The Princess Takes Flight. The final one is the only Universes Beyond card, from The Princess Bride Secret Lair: Buttercup, Provincial Princess.

I don't mean to "Uhm, actually" but don't Princess Twilight Sparkle and Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna also count twoards the Princess name count?

They do. I don’t know why my search didn’t bring them up.

Princesses Influence

Hi Mark, Happy Birthday! You and my youngest daughter, Thaelia, share a birthday! She's too young for Magic just yet, but in her stead, might I ask for any trivia of how Princesses (her favorite topic) may have influenced Magic the Gathering?

Discussing Glenn's Color

New 06 Oct 2020 Asked by fyiyevdbind 45 Comments

if skulk is blue and drawing cards is blue, what about Glenn makes him white?

A desire to help people. The card had a mechanical white component that got pulled out in set design, but iit was felt the card as a whole captured Glenn who as a character is white/blue. EDIT: White has been dipping its toe into this space with Beloved Princess.

Gender Representation Tropes

Hello MaRo, I'm loving Throne of Eldraine spoilers, and am super excited for prerelease. You're doing a great job! Anyway, what caused the gender neutral name on Wicked Guardian in comparison to Charming Prince, Faerie Guidemother, and Beloved Princess? Doesn't Magic try to go mostly gender neutral on non-legendary creatures (Angels, Demons, and Enchantresses aside)?

The tropes of fairy tales are pretty gendered, so we leaned into a little more than normal. We did work hard about being careful with ones that pushed a negative connotation.

Beloved Princess Ability

Hey Mark! Is Beloved Princess' ability (can't be blocked by creatures with power 3 or greater) the minor addition to white?

It’s not what I was referring to. We have toyed a little with this in the past.
