Ascended Lawmage

Portuguese Naming Issues

Hi Mark! Cards in Portuguese also sometimes suffer from having two cards with the same name, such as Duress and Coercion (Coerção), Carbonize and Char (Carbonizar), and (oddly in the same block) Repeal and Overrule (Revogar). Then you also have some funny mistakes such as Ascended Lawmage ("Ascended Coronermage") and Skyknight Legionnaire ("Night Sky Legionnaire").

Gold Cards Complexity

New 14 Oct 2013 Asked by flopfoot 8 Comments

Why do you think that gold cards are too complex for core sets? After learning "nessian courser costs 2 of any color and one green", what could be simpler than learning "ascended lawmage costs 2 of any color, one white, and one blue"?

It’s not a matter of individual complexity. It’s an issue with limiting how many concepts the Core Set throws at a new player.

Hexproof Evasion Concern

You've spoken before about how players hate evasion + hexproof and that you'd be toning it down, and you seemed to be doing a good job of it. But why was Ascended Lawmage printed?

Part of “toning down” is figuring out what the right amount is and that amount might be more than zero. Ascended Lawmage was us dipping our toe into the pool with a little more awareness. For example, it’s uncommon and meant to be a good limited card for its guild. It also has flying rather than unblockability so there can be some interaction. We will be taking the feedback of Asended Lawmage into account to gauge  whether we’re at the right amount or not. So, I’ll turn this to all of you - what do you think of Ascended Lawmage?
