Arcane Signet Evaluation

re: arcane signet - i think "strong" vs "weak" is not the best dichotomy to use. arcane signet is a very fair card on power level for edh, which has a legacy-like card pool. the problem is that it is so widely applicable. command tower is a similar card. it's not powerful like sol ring or ancient tomb, but there is no downside and it works in any deck which contributes to format homogenization. powerful cards are actually easier for players to self-select against in edh.

What spectrum would you use?

Mana Acceleration Nostalgia

New 25 Sep 2013 Asked by brandywine42-blog 52 Comments

I really miss the era when mana acceleration was more freely available. (dark ritual, mana vault and ancient tomb for example). Do you ever feel the need to try this sort of thing again?

Do you also miss the days of crazy card drawing and broken combo engines? : )

Dual Lands Underestimation

New 12 Dec 2012 Asked by orbitalplatypus 5 Comments

Is there a reason R&D was so cautious with the rare dual lands in Tempest? (Scabland, Pine Barrens, etc...) Cards like the Gates seem to be significantly better at common these days. Plus Wasteland and Ancient Tomb at uncommon?

For a long time we underestimated how good our dual lands can be. The big switch came when Randy Buehler started during Invasion design and convinced us the taplands weren’t too good. That was what really opend up our eyes.
