'Bad' Cards in Limited Play

New 11 Aug 2021 Asked by ne4782 67 Comments

As a Limited player, I want to say how important the 'bad' cards are. The weak cards are needed when a draft has gone badly and you need playables – who among us hasn't been reduced to playing a Yoked Ox? They're needed to make the format work. The cards I hate opening are things like Minion of the Mighty which are clearly constructed plants, but it's disappointing to me that other players want to damage my preferred format because it doesn't help theirs.

Thanks for chiming in. It helps for people to hear things from other players.

Card Reprint Decision Making

New 11 Apr 2020 Asked by admiralmemo 22 Comments

I've always wondered how much thought goes into the decision to print a reprint of a card vs. printing a functional reprint of a card. How much do you consider "Well, now Modern/Legacy/whatever players will effectively have 8 copies of this card" (e.g. Krenko's Command/Dragon Fodder)? How much is just the set's flavor (e.g. Yoked Ox/Tasseled Dromedary)?

It’s a combination of all the factors.

Creature Count Nuances

Do creatures with 0 power but not defender (Yoked Ox) count towards creature count? How about creatures with defender which can attack (Returned Phalanx)?

0 power creatures can go both directions depending on the set it’s in. In Theros, with tons of ways to build it up, a 0 power creature would count, for example. Creatures with defender that have a way to attack do count for the creature cap.
