Spirit Mirror

Unique Creature Type

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by majoraatio 56 Comments

Why was the EMN card Cryptolith Fragment // Aurora of Emrakul deemed special enough to receive a unique creature type in Reflection, with it still being the only card with the type? Wouldn't Illusion or Spirit have served the same purpose?

You made Spirit Mirror cry.

Spirit Mirror Utility

Why did Spirit Mirror allow you to destroy the reflections? Just in case your opponent had one, too?

To help get around things like Pacifism.

Spirit Mirror Function

What is the deal with the destroy ability on Spirit Mirror? Also, airline peanuts?

It allowed you to get rid of a Mirror token if something locked it down like Pacifism or Claustrophobia.

Reflection Tokens Note

Reflections appear as tokens on Spirit Mirror, and Pure Reflection. So it's not a new type, but it's the first time they've appeared on a type-line.

Mirror Card Fun Fact

New 18 Jun 2015 Asked by mtgfacts 15 Comments

It's my birthday! My favourite cards to design are mirror-flavoured. What's some trivia about your favourite mirror or reflection?

Spirit Mirror was a card I designed in Tempest (my first design lead). My goal was to make a creature that could only be killed by enchantment destruction. The card turned into a fun Johnny card that I’ve seen a lot of players do cool things with. Happy Birthday!

Booby Trap Origin

Do you know who designed Booby Trap? It was in my first pack of cards, along with Spirit Mirror :-)

I designed both Booby Trap and Spirit Mirror. Note that Booby Trap was originally the card that became Letter Bomb in Unhinged (designed by Mike Elliott). We couldn’t figure out how to mark it so you knew whose card it was. Unhinged solved the problem by having you sign it.

Zero Activation Costs

Why aren't there many cards printed anymore that have activation costs for 0:? Too complicated ala Spirit Mirror and Nomads En-Kor?

It causes a lot of confusion. What exactly does paying 0 mean? It threw many players, so we tend to avoid it.

Future of Spirit Mirror

Do you think we'll ever see something like Spirit Mirror again?

Hopefully. I was very proud of Spirit Mirror.
