Snow-Covered Land Discussion

New 09 May 2024 Asked by randomfusilier2 30 Comments

regarding your statement on snow covered: "It's a step in the right direction. I think they need to be nonbasic."why hasn't snow covered been errated to lose basic then? is there some large contingent of snow fans that would outcry? as a fan of snow myself, I'd love to see more support for snow, and if making that change would increase that chance, then please do it.

It’s not how we treat functional errata.

Wastes vs Snow-Covered

If snow covered lands were a mistake were wastes a mistake as well?

Wastes did not make the core mistake of snow-covered lands.

Snow Basics Explanation

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 72 Comments

Hi Mark,I don't understand why snow covered basics are a mistake, can you please explain? They are probably the most popular snow cards among the player base and in competitive constructed formats snow basics aren't causing any development or balance issues. They also aren't causing development or balance issues in Commander. I believe snow as a super type would be significantly less popular if snow basics didn't exist and as an archetype mechanically speaking the snow matters cards would be much weaker.

If snow-covered basic lands were non-basic, we would have costed the entire snow economy around that which would have made things significantly easier. The rewards could have been higher to balance that you couldn’t easily have as many.

Legend of Mirage Expansion

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by justherefortheschadenfreude 33 Comments

Hi Mark. I heard an urban legend a long time ago about the Mirage expansion. Since it was the next stand-alone expansion set after Ice Age, the Mirage designers early on wanted to include Tropical versions of basic lands, like how Ice Age had Snow Covered lands. The main issue though was that a Tropical Island card already existed. Is this legend true?

I have never heard that story and I worked on Mirage (on the development team).

If. It requires two things overlapping in the same set.

Snow Basics Legality

Can Snow covered basics be legal in every format? They offer no advantage in formats that lack snow, but the artwork is some of the best

Sorry. Only five cards get that honor.

Not that I know of.

Since snow covered seems to be a theme, does that mean you draft with the Snow-Covered land?

Yes.

Drafting Snow Lands

New 21 May 2019 Asked by subwayray 39 Comments

For drafting Modern Horizons, will we leave the basic snow covered land in the pack when we pass them? It seems that snow permanents may play a part, so is drafting them possibly part of the draft environment.

You need to draft the snow-covered land as that’s the only place to get it.

Snow Dual Lands

New 21 Feb 2019 Asked by philosophile42 55 Comments

If or when: Snow dual lands

Alpha dual lands that are snow-covered? A big if as it’s messing with the Reserved List (in spirit more than technicality). Other dual lands that are snow covered? Still if, but much more likely.

Popularity Business Model

New 11 Oct 2018 Asked by phyrexiathings 150 Comments

Alara, and snow covered are if. Dinosaurs are when. “Sounds of 10 year olds applauding while mature players sigh”

Popular things are a when. Less popular things are an if. That’s how business works. Also, there are plenty of older players that like Dinosaurs and not Alara or snow-covered land. Be careful not to assume what you like is always representative of players like you. Finally, Alara is a more likely if than snow-covered lands. Not all ifs are the same.

Snow Wastes Proposal

New 30 Jun 2018 Asked by smurfyscott 48 Comments

Can I try to reframe a question you just answered? If we got to a world where snow covered lands are a thing, can you make sure to include Wastes? Thanks!

Being a snow-covered world is pretty narrow. Being a world with Wastes is pretty narrow. Having one with both is very narrow. That was my point.

Snow Lands Query

Probably been asked before, but will we ever see full art snow covered lands?

That would first require us bringing back snow covered lands.

Nordic World Expectations

New 23 Feb 2017 Asked by phyrexianoracle 45 Comments

Just wanted to ensure you are aware of player expectations. When you finally do create a Nordic/Vikings themed world. We expect there to be snow covered lands and that there would be full art versions available.

R&D doesn’t consider snow-covered a successful mechanic so us reprinting the snow-covered basic lands in a Standard-legal set is dubious (although not impossible).
