White's Delaying Actions

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by nightfiremelody 8 Comments

Hello Mark! As part of White's "taxing / delaying the casting of a spell" effects such as Anointed Peacekeeper, Elite Spellbinder, Reprieve, etc., would White be allowed in-pie to put a card from an opponent's hand into their library N cards from the top? Sort of like a "You still get to play this card, but not for a couple turns" effect.

No, putting cards X from the top is something we do in blue rather than white.

Removing Poison

You've said before that Reprieve and Mana Tithe have been in-color for White for over a decade, but they just didn't get used by design teams. Is it accurate to say that Leeches is still technically in-color for White, but will never be used by a design team again? Or is removing poison counters simply a break in all colors now.

Removing poison is now not in any color.

Reprinting Universes Beyond Cards

New 08 Aug 2023 Asked by j-waffles 36 Comments

I think somebody already asked this, so sorry if it’s a repeat. If there’s a universes beyond card that you wanted to reprint with a name that isn’t specific to that IP, like “reprieve” or “bitter downfall”, would you change the name for the universes within version?

Most likely we wouldn’t.

Reprinting Universes Beyond

Quick question about generically named Universes Beyond cards like Orcish Bowmasters and Reprieve. If these cards are ever reprinted, will they have to recieve new names because they are stamped with the Universes Beyond holofoil marker, or are they fine to be reprinted with only new art?

If the name is not using IP specific words, we can most likely reprint it with the same name.

White Counterspell Limitations

New 14 Jun 2023 Asked by shaneprocrastinates 39 Comments

Hi Mark! I love that white got Reprieve. Is it out of the question for a new white "counter target spell" if it gave the opponent a consolation prize like Arcane Denial?

We’re not planning to give white “counter target spell” outright. White can delay or tax, but not 100% counter in exchange for giving the opponent a consolation prize.

Generic Universe Beyond Cards

I think a good example of a Universe Beyond card that is almost for sure going to just show up as is in a normal Magic product at some point is "Reprieve". Outside of the art and flavor text it could be in any Magic product.

Totally generic words that don’t have contextual issues are fair game.

Spell Colorshift

With the reveal of Reprieve, if or when? A colorshift of Mana Leak?

White can have that rules text. I’m not sure it gets it at that cost.

White Counterspell Mechanics

I gotta say: you've been so particular in your insistence that white counterspells should focus on "delaying or postponing a spell" that I can't believe I didn't see the new Reprieve card from LOTR coming! Such a fascinating new card, can't wait to try it

Or taxing. Delaying and taxing are the two areas in white’s slice of the pie for counterspells.

White's Remand Adaptation

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by dolbuzalo 76 Comments

Reprieve was just spoiled from the upcoming Lord of the Rings set. Is Remand in white’s slice of the pie now?

It’s been in white’s pie for a long time (as longtime readers of this blog know). Play design/set design just finally decided to make one. : )

Unfinity's Dark Humor

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by themartiangeek 63 Comments

This game seems like it's determined to stay dark and creepy, especially recent and upcoming sets. I figured that surely Unfinity would be a welcome reprieve from that, but even it seems to be leaning a lot toward black comedy this time around and is only silly and lighthearted in comparison to its surroundings. Is Magic just not a game for me?

Unfinity is filled with tons and tons of silly things. There’s a little dark humor, but it’s on a small portion of the cards.
