Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

Evaluating Nykthos Design Risk

Hey Mark, Obviously, lands that can produce more than one mana when you tap them, like Tolarian Academy and Mishra’s Workshop, are dangerous to design. But in Theros, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx was created. Was Nykthos considered dangerous during design, or was the fact that you need to invest two mana to even activate it enough of a limiting factor? Or was it thought that it being Devotion and not something easier to get out cheaply like artifacts, creatures, and enchantments limited it enough?

We knew we were playing in dangerous space, so the card got a lot of playtesting attention. Devotion is a little harder to abuse than things like number of artifacts, especially when ones that cost 0 exist in the environment.

Mark I recently graduated after 13 long years in public school, can I have some trivia on Nykthos, shrine to nyx?

It started as top down design of a temple. We connected it to devotion because of flavor.Happy Graduation!

Hey Mark, my birthday was last Tuesday, I was hoping to get some trivia on my favorite cards heroes bane or nykthos, shrine to nyx?

Nykthos was designed as a top-down temple to the gods. We used Devotion because that flavorfully made the most sense. Happy Belated Birthday!

Was Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx the marquis card of Theros? Or do you not do things like marquis cards anymore?

We haven’t done marquis cards in ages.

Devotion Mechanic Success

I really like Devotion. Slam dunk mechanic there that allows for fun decks that create a lot of interactions and tough choices. Any trivia on Devotion or on my favorite Devotion card, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx?

Nykthos was designed because we felt we needed a top-down temple (we didn’t know yet that the dual lands were going to be temples). We tied it to devotion because, well, it was a temple.

Nykthos and Gods Synergy

When designing the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, was the interaction with the activated abilities of the gods already in place? I think the flavor that the more devotion you have the more you can activate the gods is great. Or was that more of a development change? Or happy coincidence?

Nykthos was made to help devotion and devotion was always a key component if the gods so I would say yes, the connection was planned.

Devotion Aid Card

Can you confirm or deny the possibility of a card that pretty much solely exists to aid devotion? (Similar to how Darksteel Relic enabled Metalcraft)

At the Theros PAX party, we showed off Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx which is a land meant for devotion decks
