Spells and The Stack

New 30 Nov 2015 Asked by ahhopposabledigits 43 Comments

Regarding spells referencing the stack, I can only find four cards in Magic history whose printed rules text references it: Grip of Chaos, Mirari, Radiate, and Lightning Storm. Only Lightning Storm's oracle text still does, but, I'm not gonna lie, I have no desire to see anything similar in Standard.

The secret is that we can do all the effects we want without having to mention it.

Rule-Breaking Card Design

I've been re-reading through the GDS articles, and realized that Wizards created a card that you specifically told people never to make: cards that care whether or not they're on the stack. Wizards printed Lightning Storm at uncommon, and while Coldsnap intentionally did weird things, I feel like it's breaking a huge rule. Is this on the same level as "Hornet Queen" or is it less of a mistake and more of an experiment?

I’m not sure Coldsnap is a positively example of much of anything.

Red's Emotional Range

New 02 Sep 2013 Asked by dreverday 14 Comments

Hey Mark! I just got done with binge listening to your podcast, and also just got done having a really emotional experience and I have a flavor question! In Red, the color of passion, emotion and impulse. In my experiences the only emotion usually conveyed is anger or wrath, why not a Red card that has tears or intense laughter? An earthquake summoned out of sorrow or a lightning storm invoked by three friends telling exhilarating stories?

We have shown other emotions with red but as the game is a bout fighting, the aggressive emotions, especially anger, get used the most.
