Career Passion Advice

New 01 Sep 2022 Asked by greatknightgaramond 30 Comments

Hey Mark, just wanted to voice my appreciation for the podcast episode about your Wizards origin story. I’ve recently decided to leave my corporate job to get back into doing something I love, and your podcasts were an important part of shifting my perspective and making me remember how much value there is in having a job to be passionate about. That‘s definitely my favorite throughline in all your drive to work podcasts and articles. Could you offer some advice about those leap of faith moments along the way at Wizards?

The trick I like when making a hard decision is to imagine myself on my deathbed with a lifetime of reflection looking back at this decision. Giving the space of time helps me get a grasp on is this something that will fundamentally make me happier longterm.

Living Death Card Trivia

I am in the unfortunate situation that I only have a right to birthday trivia every four years, but I‘ll definitely invoke it today: Do you have any trivia on my favorite card: Living Death?

Living Death was designed by Mike Elliott. Tempest was his first design team, so had a bunch of designs he’d done that he submitted. I believe it was a brain to print design, meaning it never changed. Living Death is one of my favorite designs that I didn’t create.Happy Leap Day Birthday!

Werewolves Mechanic Update

Last year I asked if we could see werewolves on a plane other then Innistrad and you said it was possible, but they probably wouldn't be double-faced. Since Arlinn Cord is a werewolf and Ravnica is not Innistrad (I'm taking a leap of faith in saying that), will Arlinn be double-faced in War of the Spark?

No. There are no double-faced cards in War of the Spark.

Evolutionary Leap Design

I assume that Evolutionary leap putting things on the bottom randomly was to stop creatureless decks from stacking their deck?

That was part of it. We’re also trying to cut down on decision making that takes time and seldom matters.

Origins Card Insight

Today's my birthday. I'm considering the foil Gilt-Leaf Winnower I pulled from my draft prizes to be my present. Since I'm 26 today, do you have any fun facts about card 26 from Origins, Mighty Leap?

What I love about the design of Gilt-Leaf Winnower is how the design captures the sense of hypocrisy. “Wait, aren’t you the very thing you claim to hate?” “It says non-Elf. I’m an Elf.” Happy Birthday! EDIT: Oh, you asked about Mighty Leap. Yeah, I don’t have any trivia on that.

How much of design is large leaps, and how much of it is small steps?

Mostly small steps with the infrequent leap.

Card Game Evolution

So first we had playing card games (Poker, Bridge) and then we got trading/customizable card games (Magic), and now we have deckbuilding games (Dominion). Do you think the leap between Magic and Dominion is as big a leap between Magic and games like Bridge?

I think Magic is closer to Dominion than it is to Bridge.
