Mechanic Templating Reason

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by ajlvi 19 Comments

Is there a reason why Jeskai Ascendancy and Soulblade Djinn aren't templated as "Creatures you control gain prowess. (If a creature has multiple instances of prowess, each triggers separately.)"? Was it for MTGO purposes to avoid having a crazy number of triggers happen at once sometimes?

I believe that is the reason but it is just a guess on my part.

Jeskai Ascendancy Origin

Did design hand over Jeskai Ascendancy the way it is or did development change it to its current version?

That cycle was a completely different cycle. They were known as the empires and they were global enchantments you fought for control over.

Modern Format Regulation

Aaron (I'm not sure, but I believe it was him) once wrote an article where he explained how it's impossible to playtest for Modern and eternal formats in general, also explaining how B&R list is way better to regulate those formats. Could you please ask some thoughtful question mark to provide a link in the comments? I can't find it and many people need to read it, given this whole discussion on Treasure Cruise or Jeskai Ascendancy.

A smart and investigative person has linked to it below.

Online Gameplay Triggers

Given the principles of New World Order, when working in the design space of board position development was it a conscious decision to give cards like Jeskai Ascendancy mandated effects? Would you in hindsight have preferred to use terms such as 'You may untap...' so that players could legally forget to use an effect? (Rule 603.5 notwithstanding.) Thus placing any mechanical burden squarely on the owner to remember and avoiding any need to rewind.

That then causes a whole mess of triggers on Magic Online.

Old Formats Impact

So Khans has already hugely impacted older formats with 4 very defining cards. Jeskai Ascendancy, Treasure Cruise, Dig Through Time, and Monastery Swiftspear. I can't help but notice three of these cards are blue... does this signal a return to our Island loving overlords?

Or that blue cards are more likely to play into current metagames of older formats.

Jeskai Ascendancy Feedback

Hello MaRo! How do you feel about ppl saying Jeskai Ascendancy is broken, and probably will be banned in modern?

Not my area of expertise. I do like when cards we design get people excited though.
