Secret Lair's Infernal Tribute

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 21 Comments

Unrules question: with R&D's Secret Lair in play, does Infernal Tribute allow me to sacrifice other players' permanents in addition to my own?

No, the rules only allow you to sacrifice cards you control.

Card Text Consistency

Infernal Tribute's oracle says 'nontoken' but Desert Twister's doesn't. They both say "card in play". I suppose I can understand the reasons why there's a difference, but it doesn't exactly sell consistency.

As the designer of Infernal Tribute, the intent was “nontoken”. “Card in play” was how we said it at the time. Desert Twister meant “permanent” but that Magic term didn’t exist yet. So, the answer is design intent.

Card Errata Reason

I'm not sure if you know the reasoning behind this and that this question is kind of coming out of left field, but is there any specific reason the card Infernal Tribute was errated to say non-token permanent?

I assume they decided that a “card in play” meant that it was something that could exist as an actual Magic card which tokens could not.
